The award will be presented at a special ceremony to be held during the Thursday afternoon session of the FFA’s 53rd Annual National Convention. The 781 FFA members being awarded the American Farmer Degree this year represent the best of more than 481,676 FFA members enrolled in the nation’s 8,236 high school vocational agriculture departments. Recipients of the American Farmer Degree are involved in both production agriculture and in agribusiness occupations that support the nation’s fanners. FFA members begin as “Greenhsmds” and after one year of membership may be advanced by the local chapter to the degree of “Chapter Farmer. ” The third degree, that of “State Farmer”, is presented by the State FFA Association and is limited to no more than ree percent of the state’s FFA mem bership m any one year. States are permitted to submit names of candidates for the American Fanner Degree based on total FFA membership m the state. In addition to having earned the State Farmer Degree, candidates for the American Farmer Degree must have been active members of the FFA con tinuously for at least three years.' They must have a record of participation in local and state FFA ac tivities and they must have completed all the vocational agriculture instruction of fered in their high school. Candidates must have been out of high school for at least a year and must have in operation an outstanding supervised farming or agribusiness occupational program. American Farmer applicants must have earned at least $l,OOO by them own efforts through their oc cupational experience program and must have their earnings productively invested or deposited m a bank.
