Fifty-one chapters with the most comprehensive community action programs will be presented National Gold Emblem Awards, the top award in the BOAC program. One hundred and fifteen FFA chapters will receive National Silver and Bronze Awards for their efforts in community development. During the Convention one of the fifty one National Gold Emblem chapters will be selected to receive the National Citation for the best community improvement program in the nation. The four regional winners were selected from among the fifty-one National Gold Emblem Chapters by a committee that met m Alexandria, Virginia, under the supervision of the National FFA Organization and in September a com mittee composed of Washington based govern ment, educational and agriculture leaders, met to select the National Winner. BOAC is an effort by the FFA to involve its members in activities to improve job opportunities and living conditions in their com munities. Through in struction in the vocational agriculture classroom and practical experience in FFA community action projects, the FFA is seeking to further develop practical skills through community development action. To program is also designed to develop leadership ability of FFA members by encouraging them to take an active role in the community. In the classroom, FFA members learn the community development process, survey community needs and wants, identify high priority projects and seek to cooperate with other com munity groups and in dividuals. Assistmg in the effort are R.J. Reynolds Industries, Inc., of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, and the Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, Farmers Home Ad minstration (FmHA) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The FmHA is providing technical assistance in the form of aiding in the development of classroom materials on rural development. Through the National FFA Foundation, Inc., R.J. Reynolds Industries, Inc., is providing awards and ad ditional funds to develop program materials. Several awards are available to chapters that participate. Each chapter named for a national award must earn awards at lower levels of competition to make them eligible for the national award. At the state level, chapter BOAC programs are ranked Gold, Silver, or Bronze according to the ment of the activities carried out. State awards are presented at the' State FFA Conventions. One of the state Gold Emblem Chapters is named as the state winner and receives the Governor’s BOAC Citation. These chapters then compete for the four regional awards and the National Citation.
