A22—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 25,1980 Fall HARRISBURG - Penn sylvania’s fall harvest was in full gear during the week ending October 20, with six days rated suitable for farm fieldwork. Field activities included harvest of com, soybeans, vegetables, fruits, potatoes and silage com. Other farm activities included baling hay, filling silos, seeding wheat and barley, plowing and general farm chores. Silage com harvest was virtually complete, com pared to 76 percent har vested a year earlier. Throughout the Com monwealth, com for grain was 53 percent mature, and 42 percent harvested. Last year, grain com stood at 65 percent mature and 13 percent harvested. A five year average for grain com shows 69 percent mature and 19 percent harvested. Potato harvest, at 93 percent complete, was ahead of the 87 percent complete a year ago. Nor thern potato growers reported harvest at 93 percent, central growers reported harvest at 92 percent and southern potato growers reported harvest at 95 percent complete. Soybean harvest stood at 41 percent, compared to only 12 percent at this time last year. Soybean,harvest was reported at [29 percent complete in t lie north, 54 percent complete in central counties and 34 percent complete in the south. Apple and grape harvest continued across the state. Pennsylvania fall plowing was 89 percent complete compared to 90 percent complete last year. Fall planting of barley was virtually complete, on a par with last year’s progress. Wheat planting increased to 85 percent, about the same as last year’s 84 percent planted at this time. Wheat planting was at 95 percent in the north, 87 percent in central counties and 76 percent in the south. Fourth cutting of alfalfa advanced to 71 percent complete, behind last year’s 77 percent. The quality of hay made during the week was rated good fair throughout the com monwealth. Feed from pastures was rated as below average to average across the state, COLLEGEVILLE - Cynthia Ann Waltemyer, daughter of Earl and Phoebe Waltemyer, Walebe Farms, Inc., Collegeville, has been selected as a recipient of a Jack C. Nesbit Memorial Scholarship awarded by The American Jersey Cattle Club, Columbus, Ohio. The scholarship will be presented to Miss Waltemyer at the All American Junior Banquet and Fun Fest in Louisville, Ky., on November 8, in conjunction with the All American Jersey Show and Sale. Cindy was also named third place winner in the National Jersey Youth Achievement Contest this year. Cindy is a sophomore honor student at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University where she continues gear with a few reporters reporting above average feed. Pastures in the north were rated as 85 percent below average, 29 percent average and six percent above average. Pasture feed in central and southern areas were'rated at 87 and 83 percent below average, respectively. Soils were rated mostly short to adequate statewide, with northern operators rating soils 67 percent t>hort to 33 percent adequate. Central and southern far mers rated their soils at 100 percent and 92 percent short, respectively. - All fuels were rated as adequate to surplus across the state. Waltemyer to receive was selected as the out standing freshman of .the Dairy Science Club. She plans a career in large animal veterinary medicine.
