C34—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 18,1980 Who’s Nuts? Would you ever believe that Lancaster Farming has subsnbers in Brooklyn, New York? Well, I could hardly believe that someone living in the Big Apple would be interested in what’s going on out in the cornfields of our county and farm country. When I read the return address on an envelope containing a question from Lawrence Bakst, 1825 East 3rd Street, Brooklyn, New York, I had to check the postmark twice to make sure I didn’t need new glasses. Then, when I read the contents of the envelope, scrawled out in long-hand, red ink on yellow legal paper, I started suspecting that someone was out to pull my leg. The letter read: I am a current subscriber to your paper and I need a small favor. I have written to die Pennsylvania Nnt Growers Association in care of Albert Magee concerning membership and my letter was returned. Could you kindly furnish the correct address so that I may write them? You can imagine my surprise at the request. New Holland, PA Phone (717)354-4191 Brief answers to short questions SheUa's Shorts By Sheila Miller never heard of the Nut Growers Association. But, having a close family friend who visits our farm and relates the unbelievable way of life in Brooklyn that makes The Godfather read like a comic book, I could understand why this resident of that city would want to join this particular Association. I decided to check with someone to see if there really was a full-fledged, on the-level Nut Growers Association. So I called Joan Liesau with the Penn sylvania Department of Agriculture’s Information Department. Joan went to her files and in no time at all came back with the information. The Pennsylvania Nut Growers Association does exist. President of the Association is Glenn Helms, R 1 Hellertown, PA 18055. Albert Magee is the secretary-treasurer of the organization. His address is R 3 Box 78, Duncannon, PA 17020. Mr. Magee can also be reached by telephone, Joan said his number is 717/834- 4611. Mr. Bakst, I’d be afraid to ask how many nuts there are LANDIS BROS. Before signing off, Mr. Bakst asked one more favor of Lancaster Farming. He wrote: I am in need of another address. While at Ag Progress Days, I picked up the Customer Call Sheet of Trans Continental Bolt Co. But, it doesn’t include their address. I may build a hay wagon in the near future and I would like their catalog if it is available. A hay wagon in Brooklyn? You can tell this country kid hasn’t had much exposure to farming in the city. Penn State’s Nelson Gotwalt delved through the Ag Progress' Days exhibitor’s fist and found an entry for the Trans continental Bolt Co.- The gentleman to contact would be Edgar L.
