14—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 11,1980 45 lambs sell at 4-H sale BY LAUREL Staff Correspondent LEESPORT - A 115 pound Hampshire wether shown by Valerie Ernst, R 6 Sinking Spring, was named to Grand Champion honors during the Berks County 4-H Market Lamb Sale, held last week at the Leesport Market and Auction, here. Valerie is the 14-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Ernst, and a ninth grade student at Wilson High School. Having shown lambs for six years, she was very happy to win the cham pionship for the first time at ~ this event. Reserve Grand Champion was awarded to a 110 pound wether, also a Hampshire, shown by Fred Bube, Jr., Robesonia. Fred is a sixth grade student of Conrad Weiser School District. Buyer of these lambs was Rodney Muthard Meats, Temple. Prices paid were |3.00 per pound for the champion and $2.00 per pound for the reserve champion. Judging the event in which 45 lambs shown by 28 4-H’ers were entered, was Claire Engle, Penn State University. Average price Swine sale totals $60,360 BEAVERTOWN Brooks End and Par Kay Farms held their annual swine fall sale on Friday, October 3, 1960. A total of 240 head sold for $60,360, an average of $252. The top-selling animal was a Landrace Boar, Lot 173 Pakenham Essay 166-7, selling for $1,725 going to Shur-Gain Farm Maple, Ontario, Canada. The top selling Landrace Bred Gilt was Lot 74 purchased by Dale Wisler, Fayetteville, Pa. for $405. The top-selling Landrace Open Gilt was Lot 151,156 and 157 purchased by Mitch Rogers, Mayville, N.Y. for $2OO each. The top-seling Yorkshire Boar was Lot 105 purchased by Shur-Gain Farm Maple, Ontario, Canada for $l4OO. The top-selling Yorkshire * i 1 i. pounu by Fred Bube Jr., Robesonia. The buyer, Rodney Muthard, purchased the lamb at $2 per pound. per pound paid for the lambs was 77 cents, excluding the Champion and Reserve animals. The 100 head of com mercial open gilts averaged $153. This sale offering sold into five different states and Canada. Most of this sale offering was new blood imported from Scotland. The next sale offering of Brooks End and Par Kay Farms will be on January 9, 1901 with something new and different and more Scotch bloodlines.
