Younkin was chosen as Livestock Man of the Year for 1900 at the annual Penn sylvania Livestock Association banquet, Saturday, October 4. Younkin, who has served as Director of the PLA for over 20 years, was unable to attend the banquet due to recent hospitalization. His son, Bruce, received the award for him and described himself as “very proud” of his father. Other highlights of the evening, which began with a r- iced Saturday night at their annual banquet. This national award was presented in appreciation of his out standing research con tributions to dairy cattle disease control. Guest speaker for the evening was Barry L. He helped produce a slide presentation on swine housing ventilation, building insulation, and heating which won first prize at the National Agricultural Engineering Society Meeting. He was honored in 1980 by this Council for his service to the swine industry of Penn sylvania. Younkin, a native of Somerset, is married to the Year at the banquet. He is presented with a plaque by Dr. Everett Denlinger, president of the Year along with a plaque presented by Dr. Oenlinger. Younkin obtained a bachelor’s degree in animal husbandry in 1951 and a master’s degree in livestock management in 1953. Both degrees came from Penn State. Upon graduation in 1953, he joined the Livestock Extension Staff at Penn State to work in Swine Ex tension and has served in that capacity for 27 years. He is currently chairman of the Livestock, Extension Section. This year’s winner for title of 4-H’er of the year is Diane Krause, of Lehigh County. Diane, the present Penn sylvania Angus Queen, will be studying animal science at Penn State. Besides her title, Diane received a $lOO check. Diane, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Krause of Slatington, has been in 4-H for nine years. FFA’er of the year is Daryl Beiler, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Elam W. Beiler of Mifflinburg, Union County. Daryl’s present self-owned farming program includes 630 market hogs. He is working presently toward expansion twice this size. Last year, Daryl served as state Vice President of the Pennsylvania Association of the Future Farmers of America. He served as treasurer of his local chapter and is a member of the Pennsylvania Young Far mers Association. Daryl received a plaque and a check for $lOO. Also announced during the evening were the new directors of the PLA. They are: John J. Hess n, Eugene Wingert, Connie Grove and Lowell Wilson. The new officers for the Association are Dr. Denlinger, president; John Henkel, first vice president; Peter Krall, second vice president; Jesse Smith, secretary; and James Glass, treasurer.
