Gini Nissley £ MANHEIM - Eleven year-old Gim Lou Nissley left the show ring with the Grand Champion trophy at the Manheim Coummunity Farm Show’s baby beef show on Tuesday evening. “Gwenini,” originally chosen as 4-H light-heavy weight champion and 4-H overall champion is a 1115 pound crossbred Chianina- Angus. Gini’s father had purchased the champion from Glenn Ebony, an area farmer. This was Gini’s first year in competition, so the Grand Champion award came as quite a surprise to her. “I was really scared,” Gini said. “I can’t believe I won my first time here.” Gini, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jay R. Nissley, Manheim, is a member of the Red Rose Beef and Sheep Club and is also a fifth grader at White Oak Elementary School. The Nissley family is truly experienced in the show ring; Gini’s brothers, Phil and Ed, were some of her competition at the show. Ed won'the reserve champion title for FFA. Barry Geib captured the reserve champion honors with his Limousin hereford. Barry bought “Fred” at the Adams County Calf Sale. This also marked Barry’s third year of showing die FFA champion steer. Sarah Brubaker, Harrisburg Pike, won the reserve champion title for 4- H. She has been a member of the Red Rose 4-H Club for nine years. Judge Gary Dean, Strasburg, said, “This was a hard decision to make because all these kids did a real fine job and deserve •> lot of credit.” Dean, who works at Farm Credit service, operates a part-time farm with his father, William Dean. There were a total of 6 FFA contestants and 25 4- H’ers participating in the show. The evening was brought to a close with the an nouncement of Showman ship awards. Jan Waltz 2.GlennShenk Nissley Franklin Farmers Union to meet next Monday CHAMBERSBURG - A mandatory statewide milk referendum and the proposed 1981 National Farm Bill are on the minds of Franklin County fanners. So the Franklin County Farmers Union will hold an open forum for its members and the general public to discuss these issues. The Farmers Union policy meeting is slated for October 20, at 7 p.m. in the lighthouse Restaurant, just north of Chambersburg on Route 11. In announcing the meeting, county Farmers Union President Barbara Woods said of the milk referendum idea, “All in dications lead us to believe the proposed referendum will not coincide with Far mers Umon policy. Woods said the Farmers Union wants to keep its members and the general public informed about the possible referendum. Woods also is a delegate to a December 8 mini convention of the National Fanners Union in Des Moines, lowa, where representatives from all over the country will debate and adopt Farmers Union recommendations for the 1981 National Farm Bill. Farmers have the op portunity to present their suggestions for the farm bill at the October 20th meeting. All members of the Far mers Umon and the public are invited to attend the meeting.
