The Catoctin FFA Alumni Garbage feeding bill passes Congress DBS MOINES, la. - In a flurry of activity last Wednesday the U.S. House and Senate passed the garbage feeding bill designed to prevent the spread of disease, including African Swine Fever, ' Bill Buller, President of the National Pork Producers Council praised Congress for its expedient action which will serve to protect the pork industry from the disasterous consequences of the current outbreak of ASF m Central America. While the bill does not prohibit the feeding of garbage to hogs, Buller said it does require that all garbage be cooked or otherwise treated to kill disease organisms. ASF is spread through scraps of meat from infected or carrier hogs that get into garbage which is then fed to hogs. No known cure or vaccine exists for the disease and the only means of preventing its Battery Quite operation 4 batteries 6 volts 135 amps each 2 5 HP electric motor 36 knives 10 amps automatic charier Recommended for up to S bales per day operations Optional 72 Knife Kit ASK ABOUT OUR LEASE PROGRAM NO FARMER SHOULD BE WITHOUT ONE! • You Can't Buy A Batter Unit At Twice The Price • Works For Mulch of All Types • Use Old Hay or Corn Stalks • Dealerships Open Many Areas • Distributorship Open Western, Pa. • Needed - Persons to Demonstrate Choppers Beef, Sheep and Swine sale was the best sale average in its history. Pax Farms of Fairfield, Pa. bought the spread is the destruction of infected animals. Humans are not affected by ASF. “While this legislation protects the pork industry,” said Orville Sweet, NPPC Executive Vice President, “it is also protecting con sumers against the threat of reduced pork supplies resulting from an outbreak of ASF.” Outbreaks of ASF have occurred in the Dominican Republic, Cuba and Haiti, but it has not been detected in the U.S. If ASF did enter the U.S., eliminating the disease from even a small area would cost over $7 million. Eliminating ASF from a large area over a period of years could cost billions. Enforcement of this legislation will be a state function if an adequate program meeting federal standards exists. Federal enforcement will be used only in those states without adequate programs.
