Cl4—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, September 27 f 1980 LANCASTER - Halan Soldier Ann, a five-year-old, brought the top price of $3,300 at the Pennsylvania State Jersey Sale last Saturday at the Lancaster Guernsey Sales Pavilion. Ann, consigned by Harold Riddle, of Emlenton, Pa., was purchased by Wayne Knott, of Shenandoah Junction, W. Va. Knott was the top buyer at the sale, purchasing 10 head for $21,100 - about a fourth of the animals offered. A Holstein breeder, Knott is putting together a small herd of Jerseys to increase his butterfat and protein production. Her dam is Evergreens Warspite Alice and her sire is Observer Chocolate Soldier. A full sister, Halan Soldier Apollo, produced nearly 15,000 lbs. of milk and 600 lbs. of fat as a four-year-old. Second highest animal was Normandale Finalist Amy, consigned by David Nor man, of Normandale Farms, Liberty, Pa. As a three-year old, she brought $2,500. In third place was another cow consigned by Riddle, Halan Generator Tipsey. Bom in April, 1976, she brought $2,300. Both the second and third animals were purchased by Knott. Average for the sale was $1,742. ~ —ln conjunction with the state sale, the fourth annual Pennsylvania Pot of Gold sale was held under the sponsorship of the Pa. Jersey Cattle Club, Inc. Six calves are sold each year in the Pot of Gold with 25 percent of the gross retained into a special ac count. When these calves complete their first lac tation, this annual sum of money is divided among the three young purchasers whose calves have thiTtop production records. Started in 1977, this marked the first year that calves bought in the Pot of Gold were reviewed for awards. The top producer was a heifer from Spring Run Jerseys, “New Wilmington, Pa. bought in 1977 by Carol Dreisbach, daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Robert Dreisbach, of Hamburg, Pa. As a two year-old, the heifer prod fuced 11,244 lbs. of milk and 666 pounds of fat at 5.9 test. In this year’s Pot of Gold, the top calf brought $1,200.
