Solanco hog, steer sales bring top dollar
QUARRYVILLE - The
Solanco Fair Hog and FFA
Steer sale week reported
prices well above last year’s
sale returns. In all sixty-two
hogs and nineteen FFA
steers went on the auction
block.
Last year’s Grand
Champion FFA steer owner
returned in first place again
this year. Benue Houghton’s
1220 pound first place
heavyweight sold to
Ferguson and Hassler
Supermarket at $1.75 per
pound.
To outbid all other com
petitors, Truman Ferguson
maintained the position of
being top bidder since'the
fair began several decades
ago by shelling out eight
cents more per pound than
last year’s price of $1.67.
Reserve Champion steer,
sold by Sam Long, Peach
Bottom went to K and S, Inc.,
Quarryville, Rl, for $1.03 per
pound. Sale totals showed an
average price of 99 cents per
pound.
Hatfield Packing once
again bought .the Grand
Champion market hogs as
well as the reserve cham
pion. Total sale revenues for
the 62 hogs sold in lots of two
or pens of four were clearly
35 cents above market price
at 85 cents per pound.
Helping to boost the
average were the $1.46 paid
for the Grand Champion pen
pf two owned by Ryan
Rohrer, Nottingham, and the
$1.12 paid to Vicki Warfel for
her reserve champion pen of
two lightweights.
