The Pot O’Gold Production Contest encourages 4-H and FFA members to develop and test outstanding Registered Jerseys. Each year 18 Jersey heifers are sold in the sale, held in conjunction with the All American Jersey Show. Twenty-five percent of the sale gross is put into a fund to be awarded to the production contest winners. The juniors must own their animals through the cows’ 2- yr.-old lactation. The winner among the animals that complete a record within the contests’ time limits is determined by figuring the dollar value of the milk produced. This dollar value is based on the USDA average price for milk and butterfat differential in effect on December 31,1979. The Pot O’Gold Production Contest is just one of the many programs sponsored by The American Jersey Cattle Club to encourage youth participation in the Registered Jersey business. A complete brochure on AJCC Youth Programs is available by writing The American Jersey Cattle Club, P.O. Box 27310, Columbus. -
