According to David Smith, SUCCESSFUL FARMERS FIND THEY NEED TO LOOK BACK FOR A ★ ★ ★ • ★ ★ ★★★ ★ ★ corn research pathologist for DeKalb Agßesearch, Inc., the spread of Goss’s wilt is sporadic in nature, although the bacterium causing Goss’s wilt in known to overwinter in corn residue. Smith, who has traveled to Henry County to diagnose and confirm the existence of Goss’s wilt in Illinois, says there is a sharp hybrid-to hybrid difference' in field reaction the disease. “There are various levels of hybrid resistance and susceptibility to Goss’s wilt,” Smith points out. He adds that DeKalb began conducting resistance work to the disease in 1971 in Nebaraka and Colorado, and Distributed By: SEEDWAY, INC. Emmaus, Pa. 215-965-5072 in Illinois that most of the hybrids marketed by DeKalb in the area cany good levels of resistance. Smith says that Goss’s wilt can actually cause damage at any phase of plant growth. “Generally, warm tem peratures and some type of mechanical injury to the plant, such as hail or wind storms, aid in the infection of plants,” the pathologist notes. The most characteristic symptom is dark green or black spots along the edges of leaf lesions. Yellow to gray streaks appear parallel to leaf veins, and these grow together and die, causing scorched areas. Once the bacterium is present in an area, Goss’s wilt may or may not occur in following years, “but the potential definitely exists,” Smith says. According to the com disease specialist, the disease can strike young plants if appripriate con ditions exist, and a com crop can be drastically affected. “Henry County farmers escaped that level of in fection this year,” Smith says, “but in the fields I observed, it did appear as if there will be some level of economic damage.” The pathologist suggests that as a strong precautionary move, far mers in affected areas ask Upper Susquehanna (Continued from Page CSS) AmosJ Zook Nellie 10 2 Jane 9-3 Boots 2-8 Esta 2-8 Hemlock Meadow Farm Princess 5-6 Betty 4 7 MarkM Wehr 2 5-4 Wood Ann Farms Kelly 310 Mervinß Nissley 4-6 94 3-3 Melvin K Stoltzfus Girl 81 Bonny 7-2 Segis 8-3 Bess 7 7 Mina 4 0 Aaron R Zimmerman 5-9 4-0 Miriam Irene Ben Martin 7-9 305 7-9 305 3-4 305 JoeE Miller 7- 305 8- 305 5-4 305 BenS Yoder Maple 7-6 Elaine 3-0 WilmerE Zook Sally 4-6 U S Pententiary Farm 46 2-10 Paulß Smith 11 8-5 24 4-3 Daniel Z Stoltzfus Queen 6-5 Leroy C Gotshall, Jr Janet 3-10 their seed dealers to recommend resistant hybrids, and that they utilitze care not to spread the disease by cutting infected specimens and removing them from the held without following proper procedure. 16,605 20,264 18,656 18,462 297 273 305 305 305 305 23,058 18,674 305 20,692 305 23,564 305 305 289 18,991 17 918 18,258 305 305 305 305 305 18,935 22,832 17,399 22,759 25,474 305 305 16,835 17,931 17,232 19,0r3 19,776 18,797 19,724 19,498 303 299 21,414 17,955 305 21,572 305 14,663 305 195 305 20,077 16,625 18,196 305 21,964 305 19,194 46 3 7 36 40 756 758 673 731 874 679 742 874 35 38 43 657 684 788 36 37 42 35 32 678 834 734 800 825 47 40 796 710 38 34 34 663 654 665 37 36 34 694 705 663 34 36 723 652 36 772 45 653 784 682 662 39 41 36 784
