A3B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, August 16,1980 Yorkshire boars dominate 3rd Performance Test, STATE COLLEGE The top performing pen of boars at this year’s Third Boar Performance Test is an entry of four Yorkshire boars from Richard D. Miller, Miller’s Yorkshire Farm, R 1 Spring Grove. Shown from right are Chester junior showmanship champion Mike Stoltzfus, reserve champion, Lois Bagshaw and Dan Loy, judge. These York County boars came off test with an Average Daily Gain of 2.40 pounds per day. They reached 230 pounds in 136 days with 0.85 inches of fat and 5.07 square inches of loin eye. With 61.4 percent lean cuts, the boars only used 2.26 pounds of feed to produce a pound of gam. Then* percent lean cut was 63.4 percent with a loin eye area of 5.11 square in ches and fat of 0.71 inches. Lancaster County’s John Henkel had the third high indexing pen. Another pen of UNIVERSITY PARK - Lancaster 4-H’ers par ticipating in State Achievement Days here at Penn State brought home first place team honors in the Vegetable category. Team members were Cindy Risser, R 1 Leola; Ed Howell, R 3, New Holland; Guy Eshelman, R 2 Lan caster; and Jim Stauffer, Lancaster. Jn addition, Eshelman scored first in the individual category and Risser scored third. Susan Howell won first place in the Clothing category as an individual. The Lancaster team placed \%ailabk‘ now at: Yorkshire boars, these finished the test with an ADG of 2.27 pounds and a -feed conversion of 2.36 pounds of feed for every pound of gain. The percent lean cut on the pen was 60.3 percent with 0.90 fat and 5.32 square inches of loin eye. According to Robert Kimble, director of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture's Meat Animal Lancaster 4-H team tops vegetable competition second in the team clothing competition. Members of that clothing team were: Ann Willwerth, Ephrata; Susan Howell, R 3 New Holland; Sue Ayars, Landis ville; and Nancy Mays, Lancaster. Jennie Phillips placed m the top 8 in the Fashion Revue. The New Holland girl will compete m further competition, the winner of which will be announced in Chicago.
