Controlled release for mulation—probably best know by the “time capsule” cold remedy—could be a new direction m commercial pesticide information, said C. Benjamin Coffman of USDA’s Science and Education Administration. Speaking at the annual meeting of the Northeastern American Society of Agronomy, Coffman described several ad vantages of the ex perimental formulations he has been studying. “By releasing only a small quantity of herbicide into the environment at a given time, there is less likelihood of the active compound in runoff water than with most con ventional herbicide in formation. “Conversely, the remainder of the herbicide is protected from the en vironment, extending the period of weed control and possibly eliminating the need for an extra treat ment-saving fuel,” he said. Several commercial herbicides must be in corporated into the soil to protect them from decomposing, but controlled release formulations may eliminate this need. Not having to disk the herbicide in is another fuel-saving factor, said Coffman. In his presentation, Coff man was referring primarily to two controlled release substrates—starch xanthate and ureaformaldehyde. Both produce granules that must be applied with a spreader. In greenhouse tests, starch xanthate and ureafor maldehyde formulations of the herbicide, propham, more than doubled the period of ryegrass control as compared to the com- SCHOESSOW WAGON FEEDERS V. . , '/< ',‘7% h '*& Kj ‘ »- &b ?i ,vi ' _*-» M • No Plywood • No Tin WAGON FEEDERS BUILT TO LAST • All Heavy Metal Constructed FO r MANY YEARS OF USAGE AND • 90° Turning Ability TROUBLE FREE SERVICE. • 20 ft. Shasha of the Northern Regional Chemical safety in spotlight ROCK SPRINGS - Three members of the Penn State College of Agriculture will put on a skit demonstrating safe and unsafe procedures of handling agricultural chemicals at Ag Progress Days. “ Safety doesn’t have to be dull,” says Dennis J. Murphy, agricultural safety specialist, one of the program participants. “We hope to provide a little entertainment as well as get an important message across to the people. What we’U be emphasizing,” says Murphy, “is that dangerous chemicals, if handled properly, present little hazard to the user But if handled improperly, can result in permanent and hfe- Cecil County DHIA Following are the top ten dairy herds for Cecil County which are on test with the Cecil County Dairy Herd Improvement Association This information is compiled from records received in the Cecil County Extension Office during the period from June 16 through July 15,1980 OWNER Killdee Farm Zee-M Farm Joseph & Lisa Ayers Pioneer Valley Farm RD Dempsey & Sons William Fred Schrader Blair & Cammy Yurkanm BennyJ Farm Carroll Davis Kilby's Inc Research Center in Peoria, 111. A chemical safety display will be exhibited in the Educational Exhibits tent.
