Cindy Lupey likes milking best
BY SHEILA MILLER
LINGLESTOWN - On
May 9, amidst crowds of
shoppers at the bustling
Colonial Park Plaza, Cindy
Lupey became the 1980
Dauphin County Dairy
Princess.
The sparkling crown on
her head fulfilled one of
Cindy’s goals and ambitions,
she said, despite the nerves
and jitters she had to endure
to gam it.
Throughout her years at
Central Dauphin East High
School, Cindy said, she
always wanted to be in a
royal court. “But, those
contests in high school were
more a popularity thing,”
she smiled. “Being Dauphin
County’s Dairy Princess fits
me better I’m more the
farmer type.”
The daughter of Linda and
Theodore Lupey, R 4
Lmglestown, Cindy is a
recent graduate of C.D East
where she studied college
prep and business for two
years each.

Not being too cooperative in the hot sun, Cindy’s heifer Emmy Lou doesn't feel
like posing for the camera. Using her showmanship skills and her princess
charm, Cindy gets the heifer set up for the ‘judge's eye’.
Cmdy said she hopes to
work for a veterinarian as an
assistant m the near future.
“My training m business has
prepared me for the office
work, and I like working
with animals,” she said.
Her love for animals led
Cmdy mto the dairy business
three years ago when she
started helpmg out on the
neighboring Paul Miller
farm.
“At first I only helped
them to make hay,” she
recalled. “But one day Paul
asked if I wanted to leam
how to milk, and I said
‘yes’.”
Her first jobs m the bam
were washing udders and
dipping teats, Cindy ex
plained. Then putting on the
milking belts and getting the
milkers together were added
to her list of responsibilities
For her help and efforts on
the farm, Cindy said she was
given an Ivanhoe Star
Holstein heifer named
Emmy Lou. The heifer,

showing career had its ups
and downs As a member of
the 4-H Dauphin County
Dairy Club, she showed at
the Shippensburg Fair,
Carlisle Fair, Districts, and
the 1980 Farm Show.
“I love shows and meeting
people,” exclaimed Cindy,
“even though it’s hard to
stay calm and control my
nerves.”

She recalled her first
show, which was at Ship
pensburg, was one of her
most scarey experiences.
The new Dairy Princess,
who measures 60 inches tall,
tossed back her long blonde
hair and with a twinkle in
her dark brown eyes said
conclusively, “Of all the
chores I like to do, I like to
milk the best ”

Cindy will be leaving
Sunday to attend the three
day training session for
dairy princesses to be held at
St Francis College, Loretta.
Then it will be practice
and appearances with the
climaxing state competition
coming up in September,
where Cmdy, along with all
the other princesses, will
strive to be Number One for
the Pennsylvania dairy
industry.
