C2B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 12,1980 Cindy Lupey likes milking best BY SHEILA MILLER LINGLESTOWN - On May 9, amidst crowds of shoppers at the bustling Colonial Park Plaza, Cindy Lupey became the 1980 Dauphin County Dairy Princess. The sparkling crown on her head fulfilled one of Cindy’s goals and ambitions, she said, despite the nerves and jitters she had to endure to gam it. Throughout her years at Central Dauphin East High School, Cindy said, she always wanted to be in a royal court. “But, those contests in high school were more a popularity thing,” she smiled. “Being Dauphin County’s Dairy Princess fits me better I’m more the farmer type.” The daughter of Linda and Theodore Lupey, R 4 Lmglestown, Cindy is a recent graduate of C.D East where she studied college prep and business for two years each. Cindy Lupey is this year’s Dauphin County Dairy Princess WiVII* Not being too cooperative in the hot sun, Cindy’s heifer Emmy Lou doesn't feel like posing for the camera. Using her showmanship skills and her princess charm, Cindy gets the heifer set up for the ‘judge's eye’. Cmdy said she hopes to work for a veterinarian as an assistant m the near future. “My training m business has prepared me for the office work, and I like working with animals,” she said. Her love for animals led Cmdy mto the dairy business three years ago when she started helpmg out on the neighboring Paul Miller farm. “At first I only helped them to make hay,” she recalled. “But one day Paul asked if I wanted to leam how to milk, and I said ‘yes’.” Her first jobs m the bam were washing udders and dipping teats, Cindy ex plained. Then putting on the milking belts and getting the milkers together were added to her list of responsibilities For her help and efforts on the farm, Cindy said she was given an Ivanhoe Star Holstein heifer named Emmy Lou. Her career in the dairy industry began by helping with the haying on the Paul Miller dairy farm. January, stays with the other cattle on the Miller farm Cindy and her heifer’s V i a « ..... v Jt. showing career had its ups and downs As a member of the 4-H Dauphin County Dairy Club, she showed at the Shippensburg Fair, Carlisle Fair, Districts, and the 1980 Farm Show. “I love shows and meeting people,” exclaimed Cindy, “even though it’s hard to stay calm and control my nerves.” * At She recalled her first show, which was at Ship pensburg, was one of her most scarey experiences. The new Dairy Princess, who measures 60 inches tall, tossed back her long blonde hair and with a twinkle in her dark brown eyes said conclusively, “Of all the chores I like to do, I like to milk the best ” to w $ Cindy will be leaving Sunday to attend the three day training session for dairy princesses to be held at St Francis College, Loretta. Then it will be practice and appearances with the climaxing state competition coming up in September, where Cmdy, along with all the other princesses, will strive to be Number One for the Pennsylvania dairy industry.
