It takes 7 gallons of water to flush a toilet, 10 gallons of dean water to wash dishes, 20 to 30 gallons per washing machine cyde of dothes, and 30 to 40 gallons for each tub bath. A typical large city uses 70 million gallons of water per day. The need for adequate waste water treatment to dean and recyde water for our use is evident. Water covers three-fourth of the earth’s surface in an existing variety of forms, but most of our usable water supply comes from streams, lakes, melting snow, and ground water. Federal, state, and local laws have been passed to help keep water supplies dean or to clean up already polluted areas, but this is not enough. For years fanners have worked to apply conserva tion plans and practices that reduce erosion and the amount of sediment and chemicals entering streams. Local governments have re quired industry to halt ac tivities that pollute our waterways. Even this is not enough. Conservation Districts urges all citizens to use water wisely and plan to preserve sources. Reports were given on the Indiana County exchange; Jr. Livestock Field Day; County council; and demonstration day. Then the club agreed to have an ad in the York County 4-H Fan catalog.
