C2B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, July 5,1980 Major Grassland FFA winners named Four members of the Grassland FFA Chapter from the Eastern Lancaster County School District have won FFA Proficiency Awards at the state level m five categories. Wanda Steffy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leonard Steffy R 1 East Earl, won first place in the Fish and Wildlife Management Area. Wanda, whose career objective is to become an interpretive naturalist, has been enrolled in environmental agriculture years classes for 3 She has held the office of Second Reporter, President and Vice-President. She has competed at the state level in forestry, land judging and interview contests and won the Star Greenhand award in 9th grade Wanda’s super vised occupational ex perience program has in cluded pleasure horse and market lambs and she was first in the state with her Directed Laboratory ex perience record Book relating to the career of mtrepretive naturalist She has been involved in the State Conservation Leadership School for the past three years, serving as a counselor the past two years She also has coun seled at the Lancaster County Jr Conservation Camp and the Stone Valley Outdoor School To gam further experience. Wanda has also attended various programs at Nolde Forest State Park Environmental Education Center and has done volunteer work there. Wanda’s Fish and Wildlife Proficiency application will now move on to Regional competition due to her first place at the state level Christian R. Herr, son of Dr and Mrs Robert D Herr, R 2 Narvon, has placed in two Agricultural Proficiency areas. He placed 2nd in Sheep Production and 3rd in the Diversified Livestock Production Chris will be attending the Hazelton Campus of Penn State this fall majoring m Ag business. His projects have been sheep breeding, market lamb finishing, market hogs, market steer, and work experience Sheep show success has been a trademark of the Nix Besser farm. Chns has participated in and won top honors in all major shows in Pa He became the first Pa. FFA member ever to win Grand Champion show honors in market lambs with his pen of three Suffolk at the 1976 Keystone International Livestock Exposition Chns exhibited the Reserve Champion market hog in his first year showing at the Lancaster County Hog Show His most recent ac complishment in the show ring was receiving the Reserve Grand Champion steer at the 1960 State Farm Show Chns has been a very ictive member of the chapter serving as Chapter °resident, County Vice- President, Secretary, and 9th grade President He has been selected Star Greenhand, Chapter Far mer, Red Rose, and the Grassland Star Farmer Activities outside the FFA mclude being Vice-President of the Freshmen Class, Treasurer of the Student Winners of FFA Proficiency Awards at state level from Grassland Chapter include, from the left, Wanda Steffy, Barbara Herr and Christian Herr. Chris also found time to be involved in the Red Rose Beef and Lamb Club, the Keystone Stock men’s Club and the Junior Dorset Sheep Club Barbara L Herr, daughter of Dr and Mrs Robert D Herr of R 2 Narvon, has been awarded 3rd .place in the Sheep Production Proficiency area Barb is a junior at the Eastern Lan caster County School She hopes to make a career in Agricultural Education. Barb has served as President of the ninth grade FFA, Treasurer, and Student Advisor of the Chapter She is currently serving as President of the Lancaster county Red Rose FFA Chapter Barb served as County delegate to the recently held state FFA convention. Her projects have been market lambs, breeding sheep, market hogs and market steer Showing of these animals has been a very successful adventure for Barb During the 1900 Farm Show, she earned the following awards Champion Ewe Jr Show, Reserve Champion Light Heavyweight class Champion Carcass Lamb, Champion Dorset Ewe and Champion Dorset Ram Barb has earned a number of other awards with her sheep including fitting and showing contests Barb has found time to be mvolved in other activities besides the FFA They include being a member of the Red Rose Beef and Lamb Club and a member of the Girls Basketball and Track teams Most recently, she was appointed by the Governor as the only youth member of the Pa State Advisory Council for Vocational Education She will be representing, not only FFA, but all youth organizations Third place in the State Horse Proficiency Award was achieved by Dana Ar mbrust, daughter of Elizabeth M. Armbrust, New Holland. Dana was enrolled in the environmental agriculture course and plans to enroll in a two year Horse Management Course Dana hopes to reach her goal as a horse tramer/show judge as a career She held the office Pond problems reviewed at Lebanon farm LEBANON - An en thusiastic and appreciative audience of about 60 people attended the farm pond management meeting at the farm of Cyrus Bomberger, Colebrook Road, last Thursday evening. Speakers mcluded Terry D. Rader, Extension Forest Wildlife Specialist from Penn State. He spoke on species of fish to stock - either single species or a combination of species. “For single species, bass alone could be stocked, he said. “Bass - blue gill (sunfish) or bass - golden shiner are preferred stockings.’’ Wilham Snyder, Water ways Patrolman for the Pennsylvania Fish Com mission, told those m at tendance that the farm families and farm em ployees who reside on the farm are not subject to the same regulations as those enforced in streams and lakes. The farm families and employees may fish without a license m their farm ponds, he said Karl Hellenck, District of chapter Reporter and has competed in county poultry judgmg and the State FFA Pleasure horse judging, winning a bronze medal Dana was also Star Chapter Degree recipient in 1978 Dana’s horse related activities have included a production enterprise project on pleasure horses in addition to work experience at New Holland Sales Stable and Symbol Acre Farm She has also been involved in showing and training horses and giving nding lessons She is a member of the Keystone Appaloosa club Conservationist, Soil Con servation Service, talked briefly on pond site selection and construction Robert G Wmgard, Ex tension Forest Resource Specialist, discussed the need to properly identify pond weeds before starting a control program. “When the weed is iden tified, the volume of water must be calculated to determine the amount of herbicide to use, he said. He also stressed the need to obtain a permit to treat aquatic weeds in farm ponds. The permit is free and forms can be obtained from Fish Commission or Penn State Extension per sonnel. Dennis Hoke, County Agent, noted attendees will now meet requirements for re-certificatin of their private application license for purchase and use of certain pesticides.
