Usually a tune when Grange staffers and in formed outsiders instruct the members on various Hardwood workshop UNIVERSITY PARK - Expanded and improved overseas marketing of Pennsylvania’s hardwood forest products will be considered during a two day workshop for the forest based industry at Penn State, August 26th and 27th Subjects to be covered will include: assessment of export potentials, market selections and evaluation, financing and payment, transportation, documen tation, freight forwarding, sales and distribution channels, export trends and prospects, product specifications and non-tariff barriers and restrictions. Program participants will include representatives from the USDA Forest Service, U.S Department of Delaware County 4-H Horse Show Saturday MEDIA The Annual Four-Leaf Clover Horse Show and Tailgate Sale will be held at Rose Tree Park on Route 252 in Media, Satur day, July 12, starting at 8 30 a m., ram or shine. This Horse Show is the mam fund-raising activity conducted by the Delaware County 4-H Clubs ac cording to C R Bryan, Jr, County 4-H Agent The event is sponsored by the 4-H Board of Directors, and profits will go to the 4-H Development Fund The Horse Show is open to both adult and junior riders, with 24 classes in hunt seat, Western, and short stirrup divisions Championships will be awarded to high point scorers m short stirrup, pony hunter, and horse hunter. This award marked a clean sweep of the depart mental awards for the Pennsylvania Grange. Mary Buffington, of Chester County, and Ruth Hoover, of Blair County, won the Lecturer of the Year, and the Women’s Activities Director of the Year Awards, respectively. MeeCee Baker, of Port Royal, Juniata County, took first place in the Mid- Atlantic Public Speaking Finals, and also took the top honors in the Mid-Atlantic Sign-Smgmg Competition In the public speaking contest, the twenty year-old Granger presented a speech entitled “The Legacy of the Grange” Her topic covered the broad range of Grange programs available to people of all ages The award winning per formance in the Sign-Singing competition, consisted of a Bette Midler song, “The Rose”, rendered in the hand sign language of the deaf. Kermit Richardson, the National Grange Lecturer, keynoted the formal opening sessions with a speech en titled, “Opening The Doors of Tomorrow”. Richardson commented that organizations like the Grange should “try to structure their programs to best fulfill the needs of tne public.” “We live in a country that prides itself in its educational opportunities We should work toward educating ourselves toward greater personal develop ment, beyhond that which is available to us from the schoolroom and the teacher.” He also noted that the Grange should devote as much of their tune to per forming services for com munities as possible “After all, service should be the price we pay for the space we occupy,” he said The workshops offered to the Grangers touched on various topics, including generating local publicity and proper newswntmg, utilizing Grange policy, and developing better educational programs. Nan Hunt, of Valley Rural Electric Cooperative, Huntingdon, presented a program entitled Danger House. The program covered avoiding common electrical hazards around the farm and home.
