DlB—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, June 7,1980 Poultry specialist UNIVERSITY PARK - Floyd W. Hicks, professor of poultry science extension and chairman of poultry science extension at Penn State, will retire July 1 with over 17 years of service. Prior to his appointment to the Penn State faculty in 1963, he served 16 years on the Michigan State University’s Extension Service staff. A native of Michigan, Hicks earned three degrees from Michigan State University; a bachelor of science in 1942, master of science in 1957, and doctor of philosophy in 1961. In the area of poultry science, Hicks has placed emphasis on educational and field study programs dealing with poultry management through environmental control m a greatly ex panding and changing technological poultry in dustry. To aid the state’s poultry servicemen who work closely with producers, the professor helped organize seminars designed to keep industry personnel up-to date on new technological developments. The interest generated at these seminars resulted in special company training by the specialist. Topics included ventilation, housing, equipment, health management, and nutrition. The retiring specialist assisted in developing a “Farm Flock and Preplanning Topics Management Guides” to help prospective poultrymen in managing egg, broiler, and turkey production. The guide was distributed throughout the nation. Hicks In an effort to assist poultrymen and industry servicemen with en vironmental requirements of new poultry houses, Hicks conducted over 200 ' demonstrations to document changes in ventilation procedures. As a result of these demonstrations, changes in poultry systems resulted in annual net savings of over $50,000 in energy costs. The retiring extension specialist helped organize and conduct the highly successful annual Poultry Sales-Service Conference, was responsible for the Pennsylvania Farm Show’s poultry exhibit, and assisted with 4-H and FFA poultry judging. Hicks is co-author of the “Pennsylvania Poultry Handoook”, “Poultry Science Topics,” and author of numerous technical papers and popu’ar articles. He was recipient of a TRI-STAR Trailers... He was a poultry consultant to the United Arab Emirates. In 1975, Hicks was recipient of the Allied In dustryman of the Year Award from the Penn sylvania Poultry Federation. is a member of the Poultry Science Association; World’s Poultry Science Association; Alpha Zeta, Epsilon Sigma Phi, Phi Kappa Phi, and Gamma Sigma Delta societies and fraternities; and past president of the Extension Professors Association. Hicks was a member of the University Faculty Senate and, in the College of Agriculture, was chairman of the air quality committee, member of the en vironmental quality affairs committee, and Extension program planning com mittee. During World War 11, he commanded an assault ship that made 95 English channel crossings during the Normandy invasion.
