Hearing set on fees, expansion of Order 2 Albany, Syracuse and New York, N.Y.; and Newark, r N.r " ’ Forest pointed out that the proposed amendments that will be heard would increase the transportation allowances for milk handlers to reflect more nearly the cost of assembling milk from dairy farms and tran sporting it to plants for processing. The hearing was requested by the North Atlantic Milk Processor’s Association, which includes a number of the handlers regulated under the New York-New Jersey cancer causers in food exposure to cancer-causing agents. “Historically, USDA has conducted research, education and animal and plant health protection programs in service to the agricultural community,” Bergland said. “We will continue to fulfill that responsibility. “However, USDA also recognizes its equally im portant responsibility to the public health. Under federal meat, poultry and egg products inspection man dates, USDA cooperates with other federal agencies to establish common prin ciples for identifying and regulating cancer-causing substances,” Bergland said ~ Through the Irragency Regulatory Liaison Group, Bergland said, the federal agencies responsible for AGWAY marketing order. It was also announced by Forest that interested persons have until June 13 to submit additional proposals relating to a possible ex pansion of the New York- New Jersey and Middle Atlantic order areas to in clude several unregulated counties in Pennsylvania. Cooperative associations in the two markets have proposed an enlargement of the regulated marketing areas. The market expansion proposals are being held for possible consideration at a carcinogen regulation are developing the criteria for identifying carcinogens and assessing their human risks. USDA’s Food Safety and Quality Service is a member of this group. USDA supports the findings and the policies of this interagency group, Bergland said.
