D24—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 26, 1960 Postmortem exams, slaughter inspections urged LANCASTER - Routine postmortem examinations and slaughter inspections were highly recommended by a visting veterinarian from the University of Florida at a meeting for swine breeders and feeders in Lancaster on April 16. “The money spent on having a dead animal examined may be among the best money ever spent on your herd,” Dr. Neil Becker said. “Slaughter inspections are like quality control and tell you bow good a job you’re doing in such things as dewonning.” There’s no perfect de wonner, according to Dr. Becker, and the best thing is to keep pigs from getting worms in the first place. Posting an unthrifty feeder pig before the audience, Dr. Becker stressed that “no pig is born to be a runt; there's always a reason.” As be proceeded with the examination. Dr. Becker discussed some of the diseases and how they can be detected from a post mortem. Concerning iodine treatment for navals, Dr. Becker did not express NOTICE 9TH ANNUAL CONSIGNMENT SALE MT. He recommended in corporating long-acting penicillin with iron shots to reduce such infections. Also discussed was atrophic rhinitis, which prevents the turbinates in the pig’s nose from reaching normal size. This affects the pig’s air filitration system, according to Dr. Becker, and increases the chances for pneumonia. Dr. Becker’s diagnosis for > the feeder posted at the meeting involved a con striction of the esophagus, which was likely due to a birth defect. He found the opening into the stomach quite constricted with bile buildup and little food in the stomach or intestinal tract. The visting veterinarian! also discussed African swine fever, which he located as close as 90 miles away in Cuba. “It resembles hog cholera,” he said. “It’s not a matter of if we get it but when. We don’t have a vaccine for it and little hope for one.” He explained that domestic producers in CM I ‘M IV Posting of feeder pig is begun by Dr. Neil Becker at Lancaster swine meeting. confinement shouldn’t have climates since it is earned too much to worry about by a particular soft tick, though.
