The Pennsylvania Friends of 4-H, a volunteer group interested in the develop ment of youth, adopted a constitution and bylaws and elected officers for 1980. Officers are: Russell Larson, retired Penn State provost, chairman; Thomas Bohlender, president of Brookfield Dairy, R 1 Sharpsville, vice-chairman; and Maurice Kramer, state 4-H youth director at Penn State, secretary-treasurer. Directors are: Fred Meckley, Meckley’s Limestone Products, Hem don; Harold'Ott, area 4-H agent, Sharon; and Casimir Welch, Westi-ighouse Electric Power Systems, Pittsburgh. Other board members are John Aichele, Milton Her shey School, Hershey; Mark Branstetter, Sperry-New Holland, New Holland; Robert Biddle, Philadelphia Electric Company, Chester; Elbert Howarth, Alcoa Laboratories, New Ken sington; Donald King, Whitmoyer Laboratories, Myerstown; C. R. Bryan, Delaware County Extension agent; and James Van Horn, extension rural sociologist at Penn State. Serving as ex officio members are James Beattie, dean of the Penn State College of Agriculture, and Thomas King, associate director of the Pennsylvania Cooperative Extension Service. “About 6 percent of the state’s youth, ages S-19, are involved in Extension ser vice 4-H programs each year,” points out Beattie. “There is the potential to reach many more young people in their develop mental years with additional funds from the private sector.” Maurice Kramer, who will administer the funds, notes that the Pennsylvania Friends of 4-H efforts may assist in expanding 4-H volunteer involvement. It also can help in reaching new members, both rural and urban, and establish and support youth training and development facilities. “Presently, individuals who wish to support Penn State’s 4-H program do not have a viable mechanism to make financial contributions to expand program quality,” the 4-H youth director ex plains. “Pennsylvania Friends of 4-H was organized for this purpose.” Perry 4-H Saddle Up Club The Perry County 4-H Saddle Up Club will hold it’s next meeting Tuesday, April 15 at 7:30 p.m. in the New Bloomfield Courthouse Conference Room. A movie is scheduled and plans for a 4-H Open Horse Show, which will be held May 24 at 9 a.m. at the Newport Fairgrounds, will be discussed. New members are welcome. Reported by Teresa Miller.
