Are farmers becoming an
easy mark? asks Ed
Andersen, Master of the Na
tional Grange.
It would seem everytime
the Administration talks
about balancing the budget
and puts forth an anti
mflation message, farmers
head the list of who’s going
to be hurt the most, said
Andersen.

Grange asks if government
takes advantage of farmers
The American farmer can
always be counted on to do
his part, to sacrifice as much
as the next American, but
there comes a time, said
Andersen, when farmers
have to ask themselves if
they are being taken advan

represent a major voting
block and subsequently have
become an easy mark.

Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 12, 1980—D1l
American farm population
showed considerable
restraint and understanding
when the President announc
ed the Soviet gram embargo
in January. He said farmers
knew the embargo would
have some effect on their
economic future regardless
of the President’s
statements that he would off
set the loss of sales through
various price support pro
grams.
At present, com prices
have dropped 30 cents per

money to pay back last

trols is putting farmers into
an impossible situation.
Farmers just cannot sur
vive in the face of plum
meting farm pnces par
ticularly at a tune when
money is needed for this
year’s planting season. The
President has also ordered
Secretary of Agriculture
Bergland to limit farm
credit by raising farm credit
rates and has threatened to
veto an on-farm storage
facility loan program
because the interest rate is
not high enough.
Andersen said the
American people better
prepare themselves for a
change m their diet because
farmers will not be able to
produce what they can’t af
ford to plant or feed.
