Inflation kills farming fun
PFA members tell Congress
WASHINGTON, D.C. -
“Inflation takes the fun out
of farming,” was the
message brought to
Washington, D.C., by more
than 200 farmer-members of
the Pennsylvania Farmers’
Association, who hosted the
Pennsylvania congressional
delegation at a banquet here
last Wednesday at the
Quality Inn Capitol Hill.
“Inflation is deadly to
those who try to save, or who
must live on fixed incomes,”
said Eugene Thompson,
PFA President and an In
diana County dairyman, in
his address to the farmers
and congressmen
“Inflation takes most of
the fun out of farming
“A tractor of between 110
and 129 horsepower, costing
only $14,500 about five years
ago, now costs around
$25,000,” according to
Thompson
The farm leader blamed
“excessive deficit spending
by the federal government

and the creation of new
monies to make up the
difference” as the root cause
of inflation. He suggested
that the Pennsylvania
congressmen get behind
efforts to adopt a con
stitutional amendment that
would place limitations on
federal spending and
taxation.
The Pennsylvania Far
mers’ Association supports
the legislation, Senate Joint
Resolution 56, introduced by
U S Senator H John Heinz
111 (R-PA) and Richard
Stone (D-FL).
Thompson told the group
that a limitation on spending
was not the total answer but
it would be “a start in the
right direction ”
Earlier, Thompson urged
the* Pennsylvania
congressmen to support
efforts to pass the national
agricultural bargaining act
of 1979, HR-3535, whidj
already has the support of
three Pennsylvania
congressmen, Austin J

Murphy, John P. Murtha and
Donald L. Ritter.
The proposed bargaining
legislation contains four
major provisions: (1) It
requires the establishment
of a system in the U.S.
Department of Agriculture
for defining and crediting
voluntary membership
producer associations as
bargaining units; (2) It
makes “good faith”
bargaining a mutual
obligation of the farmer and
the handler-processor, (3) it
eliminates such practices as
coercion, intimidation,
discrimination, bribery or
other inducement on the part
of either party and (4) It
establishes rules and
regulations for enforcement
purposes
Presently there are no
requirements by the federal
government for handlers or
processors to negotiate in
good faith with producer
owned and controlled
marketing associations
Thompson also said his
organization opposes any
form of national health in
surance, because “more
than nine out of ten U.S.
citizens are now covered by
some form of health care
insurance.”
In his opinion, the
“catastrophic"” health
benefits now being proposed
are ‘‘the first step toward the
ultimate nationalization of
aIIUS Health Services.”
“The Department of
Health, Education and
Welfare predicted that
medicare would cost $9OO
million for the first full year
of benefits,” Thompson
stated. “The actual cost was
$3.4 billion - almost four
times the original estimate.
The farm leader suggested
that the best solution to
improved health care in
surance would be individual
income tax credits on
premiums paid for
enrollment in private health
care plan c
