Franklin Extension BY RUTH ANN BENEDICT Staff Correspondent KAUFFMAN STATION - “Land is a resource, definitely not a commodity.” These were the words that Marion Deppen, Assistant Director of the Extension Service of Penn State University, had for some 315 people attending the 62nd Annual Meeting-Dinner of the Franklin County Agricultural Extension Association. The event was held at the Kauffman Station Community Center, Kauff man Station. Deppen who waa guest speaker for the meeting dinner affair spoke on “land and energy, its issues and prospects.” Speaking on the land resources that we now have Deppen related that in Lancaster County TOW aeres of land has been contacted to non-agricultural use. He reported hearing from a source In Lancaster County that “all the development in that area could hate been consolidated into 1600 acres.” Directors were elected to the Board of the Association during a brief business meeting. Re-elected to three-year terms were: Marvin E. Hissong, Lema&ters, Montgomery Township; and P. Joe Musser, Rl Newburg, Lurgan Toanship. New directors elected were: John C. Brake, Mercersburg, Peters Township; Charles H. Myers, R 2 Cbambcraburg, Letterkenny Township; and Barbara Woods, Fan nettsburg, Metal Township. Appreciation plaques were presented to retiring Directors by the Board President James L. Wilson, Lemasters. Shearer, Franklin County Extension Director, introduced the 14-staff members from the Franklin County Cooperative Ex tension Service located in Chambersburg. Shearer noted the many services provided to area residents by the Extension Service. They include 4-H, Dairy, Homemaker and Nutrition Programs, Livestock, Crops, Resource Development...plus many other areas. He also noted the largest percentage of staff time is spent on Nutrition Programs, and 4-H and Youth Development Programs. “Agricultural programs rate second which is a surprise to many people” said Shearer. “We are proud of what is going on in extension. We need your support and your attendance here tonight shows your support and interest” stated Shearer.
