AlB—Lancaster fanning, Saturday, febrory f, 1980 LANCASTER - The Pennsylvania Pork Producers Council will hold their second Keystone Pork Congress next Wednesday and Thursday. The scene of this event will be the Host Farm, located on Route 30 East, Lancaster. Kicking off the event will be a morning trade show, along with a discussion on what commercial pork producers need from the boar producers. Other management discussions will follow on topics like replacement gilt management, feeder pig handling, breeding centers and hog outlook. There will also be a program geared for the home. A lard recipe contest will be judged, and the National Pork Queen will be on hand to talk to the par ticipants. And, for those hog producers who find the marketing subject too hard to take, there will be a course in C.P.R., cardio pulmonary resuscitation on Now Is The Time (Continued from Page A 10) forages is one of the most To Market Those Fat Cattle important things in the The beef cattle market is a feeding program. Growers bit discouraging to many should now be planning what local feeders. Prices have kind of forage crops they not responded to increased hope to produce this year. costs. Both hay, silage, and pastures crops respond to good management. Growers who make a special effort to get maximum yields of quality forages usually do get more than the average. As an example, some of the top growers in the 1979 Alfalfa Growing Contest got 7 tons of alfalfa per acre. This did not just happen. They planned and made do the same with hay crops, com for silage, and for grazing land. Doing all of the practices that you know and doing them on time, will often get encouragemg results. I realize it is difficult to sell a string of finished cattle when the market is not suitable. However, to keep them on feed means higher cost of grain and less price per pound when marketed, in most instances. It might be good planning to be cutting out the heavier cattle each week and sell them rather than to hold the entire string, hoping for a price advance. The continued feeding of finished cattle is just “poor business” at this time. Montgomery Co. Dairy Breeders Meeting; ABC Friday, February 15 York Co.
