The fed cattle trade
followed a more stable
course than most recent
weeks. Prices edged
cautiously upward under a
generally good demand by
most buying interests
despite only limited early
support from carcass
trading. Yield grade con
tinued to be a major price
determining factor with best
inquiry for Choice 3 steers
producing a 600-800 lbs.
carcass. Heifers were in
good demand as carcass
pnces were virtually the
same as carcass steer
prices. Local marketings
were moderately expanded
over the previous week, but
were quite well distributed
over the trading period. The
run mcluded a fairly liberal
percentage Choice steers
and heifers although many
consignments were mixed 3-
4 yield grade and some
carried a rather heavy
coating of mud. Slaughter
steers made up ap
proximately 45 percent of
the week’s total and heifers
33 percent, cows comprised
15 percent and feeders 5
percent.

Ask the Old Farmer; This year is a Leap
Year What is the meaning of the term’
GP, Ottumwa, lowa,
Leap Year comes upon us every fourth year It
is not, as many suppose, somehow connected
with the fact that unattached females may pro
pose to males at this time It is so called because
the added day (Feb 29) makes every day after it
"leap over" the day of the week in which it
would come in common years
