JOSEPH, Mo. - Angus and Angus-crossbred steers swept the interbreed competition at the 1980 National Western Stock Show as they took grand and reserve grand cham pionships in the steer, feeder cattle and fed beef steer contests. In the open steer show, all eight final contenders for the grand and reserve grand champion honors were black. A 1,231-pound Angus crossbred steer exhibited by 13-year-old Joel Kampen of Humboldt, lowa, was slapped grand champion. The steer brought a top bid of $ll per pound from Nicky’s Restaurant, Estes Park, Colorado, bringing its young owner 13,541. Fred Orr, Golden, Colorado, led his 1,117-pound steer to the reserve grand champion spot. L.C. Fulenwider Jr., representing Box Elder Farms Co. of Denver paid a near-record $7 per pound for the steer, bringing the total purchase price to 37,819. Judges >of the steer show were George Stratheam, Mariposa, California, and -Frank Sewald, Longmont, Colorado. Feeder Steer Winners Both grand and reserve grand champion feeder steers were pens of Angus crossbreds entered by Box Bar Ranch, Eddyville, Nebraska. The top pen averaged 651 pounds, and five head sold for an average of 32,780. The reserve pen, weighing an average of 565 pounds, brought a 31,730 average on five head. Hyland Angus Ranch, Ree Heights, South Dakota, put together the champion pen of Angus feeder steers. The calves weighed 594 pounds, and six head sold for an average 0f3845. Uhrig Ranch, Hemingford, Nebraska, exhibited the reserve champion pen of Angus feeders. The calves weighed 728 pounds and six head sold for fm average of 31,375. Judges of the feeder cattle pens were Dob Dorsey, Eaton, Colorado, Jerry Adamson, Cody, Nebraska, and Tom Reedy, Lovington, 'lllinois. Fed Beef Contest Orval R. Hartman, Pueblo, Colorado, entered the champion Angus and grand champion steer carcasses in the fed beef contest. The carcasses averaged 688 pounds, with a 14.48 square inch ribeye area, .42 inches of fat at die 12th rib, and a yield grade of 1.85. The reserve grand champion and reserve champion Angus steer carcasses were entered by Harry Bostrom, Sterling, Colorado. Donnie Stoltzfus, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harvey W. Stoltzfus, Morgantown, showed dairy cows. In the opeh contest, which is for anyone, not just FFA or 4-H, Donnie’s cow, Pennwood Stroke Honey, took second place, and Pennwood Joe Kokoa placed eighth, out of about 200 cows. In the Junior Division, Pennwood Stroke Honey Was the first place cow, also the champion. Pennwood Joe Kokoa placed third in the Junior Division, out of about 100 cows. Nelson Beam, son of Mr. and Mrs. Omar Beam; Elverson, showed pigs. One of his pigs placed sixth in the heavyweight class and the* other placed twelfth N in the light heavyweight class. Scott Stoltzfus, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. Wilmer Stoltz fus, Elverson, showed pigs. Scott’s one pig placed seventh in the lightweight class, and the other placed tenth in the middleweight class. Turtwdiargers Roto Master Air Research Colorado, exhibited the reserve Champion Angus heifers. The reserve grand champion heifer carcasses were Angus crosses entered by Larry Lind of - Ford Collins, Colorado. Diane Stoltzfus, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Houck, Elverson, also showed pigs. Diane’s one pig placed sixth in the mid dleweight class and the other placed seventh in the light heavyweight class. Torh Homberger, son of Mrs. Sandy Homberger, „ Morgantown, showed sheep. According to the Canadian Government’s Health of New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland (including Labrador), and British Columbia for over two years. Under the proposed cattle from these five provinces could enter the United States under certain conditions. They would ahve to be ac companied by a certificate issued or endorsed by a salaried veterinarian of the Canadian Government. The sf would only be broken at the U.S. port of entry by the U.S. port veterinarian. To maintaiir status as a brucellosis certified-free area, milk from dairy herds in each province is subjected to three milk ring tests for brucellosis each year. Non daify herds must have had a rate of five percent market cattle tests conducted each year or a complete herd test at the end of each 3-year period.
