FFA hosts first hog BY SHEILA MILLER PHILADELPHIA - The City of Brotherly Love’s FFA chapter hosted their first annual market hog show and sale last Saturday. The Philadelphia Chapter FFA’ers and their advisor, Ed Hall, were excited about the first big livestock show to be held at the W.B. Saul High School. Holding a hog show in Philadelphia drew the in terest of parents and passers-by on the four lane highway that runs past the' school. People from the city stopped by to see what a hog show was all about, and some came to take ad vantage of the on-foot market. For those city-folk who bought a market hog from one of the FFA students, advisor Ed Hall made arrangements to have the hogs taken to a local processing plant directly from the sale. Not only were the local people there to buy hogs, so were Penn Packing, Philadelphia, Hatfield Packing, Hatfield, and Leidy Packing, Souderton. As a matter of fact, Penn Packing bought the grand champion hog, shown by Todd Quinby of Upper Bucks, for $5.25 a pound. The contending bidder on the 194 pound grand champion was Hatfield Packing. During an af ternoon of enthusiastic bidding, these two major companies bought 37 of the 47 hogs marketed.
