BY DEBRA STRICKLER
HARRISBURG - Donald
Sheiss of Chambersburg,
Franklin County, captured
the grand championship of
the junior market swine
classes at the Farm Show.
The grand champion was
chosen from the
heavyweights by judge,
Charles Andrews of
Bloommgburg, Ohio.
Donald proudly exclaimed
this was his first year of
showing swine. He is a
member of the
“Waynesburg Porkers”.
Sharing the championship
spotlight was the reserve
champion exhibited by
Steven Strauss of R 1
Ephrata. Unlike Sheiss, this
was Strauss’s last op
portunity to compete in the
Farm Show’s junior show.
The reserve champion a
Spotted Poland China was
also selected from the
heavyweight class.
Strauss purchased the
reserve champion’s mother
at a Farm Show bred gilt
sale two years ago. She was
then bred to Frank Ruoss’s
Duroc boar to produce this
champion.
Rick is a 19 year old
member of the Ephrata
CloisterFFA Chapter.
Although he will not
compete in the junior swine
show ring again, Steve ex
pressed an interest in selling
feeder pigs to other 4-H and
FFA members.
Steve and his brother Rick
maintain ten herd sows.
Since Steve as a job away
from home, exhibiting hogs
is a weekend and evening
hobby. Eventually, he hopes
to have a farm.
Todd Grave of Felton,
York County, exhibited the
champion hghtheavyweight.
Reserve champion light
heavyweight was shown by
todd Bennccoff of Kutztown,
Lehigh County.
Champion middleweight
