A42—lancwter Farming, Saturday, January 12,1980 Sheiss BY DEBRA STRICKLER HARRISBURG - Donald Sheiss of Chambersburg, Franklin County, captured the grand championship of the junior market swine classes at the Farm Show. The grand champion was chosen from the heavyweights by judge, Charles Andrews of Bloommgburg, Ohio. Donald proudly exclaimed this was his first year of showing swine. He is a member of the “Waynesburg Porkers”. Sharing the championship spotlight was the reserve champion exhibited by Steven Strauss of R 1 Ephrata. Unlike Sheiss, this was Strauss’s last op portunity to compete in the Farm Show’s junior show. The reserve champion a Spotted Poland China was also selected from the heavyweight class. Strauss purchased the reserve champion’s mother at a Farm Show bred gilt sale two years ago. She was then bred to Frank Ruoss’s Duroc boar to produce this champion. Rick is a 19 year old member of the Ephrata CloisterFFA Chapter. Although he will not compete in the junior swine show ring again, Steve ex pressed an interest in selling feeder pigs to other 4-H and FFA members. Steve and his brother Rick maintain ten herd sows. Since Steve as a job away from home, exhibiting hogs is a weekend and evening hobby. Eventually, he hopes to have a farm. Todd Grave of Felton, York County, exhibited the champion hghtheavyweight. Reserve champion light heavyweight was shown by todd Bennccoff of Kutztown, Lehigh County. Herr’s first place ewe lamb had also been named the champion at the Dorset’s open competition earlier m the week. Barb’s sister, Margaret, took the first place honors in the yearling ewe class. John Sevick of Centre County had the reserve champion ewe, also chosen from the ewe lamb com petition. Sarah Brubaker left the junior show ring with the grand champion ewe of the Hampshire breed. David Lytle of New London, Chester County, earned the reserve honors. For Sarah Brubaker, this was the second consecutive year she took the Hampshire championship. Last year’s champion ewe was the mother to this year’s champion. As a member of the Lancaster County Red Rose Beef and Sheep Club, Sarah is serving as the secretary. In her first year of junior competition, Barbara Rohrer swept the grand championship of the Southdown breed. Barbara is the daughter of Robert and Anne Rohrer, R 1 Quarryville. Billy MacCauley made a clean sweep of the Suffolk competition taking both the grand and reserve cham pionship honors. Both champions had taken the first and second place honors in the ewe lamb class competition. The reserve champion was a sister to last year’s junior Suffolk champion also exhibited by Billy. His sister, Nancy Mac- Cauley, had placed first in the year 1 mg ewe com petition. The MacCauleys are members of the Chester County Golden Fleece 4-H Club. In the Cheviot com petition, Teresa Fink of Lehigh County exhibited the champion. Jeff Mellott of Fulton County took the reserve honors. Steven Calvert of Somerset County exhibited the grand champion Shropshire ewe. The reserve champion was shown by David Harpster of Centre County. G. Monte Chappell of Lexington, Kentucky, judged all classes of the Junior Sheep Show.
