The Helmans have been going to the Farm Show in Harrisburg every year for the last five and have been providing some stiff com petition for names that may be better known in the dairy business. They’ve capped a first get of sire award, and a fistful of lesser awards for mostly younger stock. Some of their buyers have fared even better. One cow, when the Helmans showed her, was an Honorable Mention All-Pennsylvania yearling. As a two-year-old out of somebody else’s barn, she was the 1976 All- Pennsylvania Champion in her age group. With Rocky gone, the Helmans are relying more heavily on artificial breeding, and they don’t mind paying the price to breed their better cows to top bulls. They have one Ivanhoe Star daughter now in the milking herd, and a few heifers waiting in the wings. And, yes, they’ve already sold a number of their Ivanhoe Star daughters. If you hang around the dairy bam or the show ring next week at the Farm Show, you’ll be able to get a good look at the Helman animals. Shorthorns imported to U.S. OMAHA, Neb. - The American Shorthorn Association recently an nounced the arrival of five bulls and 46 females to the United States Quarantine Station. These animals are Irish Shorthorns which will bring new blood to the American lines first un ported to this country m 1783. In the past eight years, only 125 head of Shorthorns were imported into the U.S. Occasionally, an outstanding bull has been imported, but entire airplane loads of females is something unique in this area. The Shorthorn program in Ireland is designed and supervised by the govern ment. In what they term the Irish Scheme, they select tlie cattle with only large frames, heavy muscling and high productivity, developing a strong genetic base.
