E2B—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, January 5,1980 Ag research returns high UNIVERSITY PARK - Land-grant college research to improve food supplies is yielding some of the highest returns on investments of any business-as high as 52 per cent, says B. R. Baumgardt of the Agricultural Experiment Station at Penn State. The 52 per cent is the return on investments in certain areas of animal research, Baumgardt reported. “Even when the return on tax momes spent for animal research is only 17 per cent, as in some years, that figure would please most in vestors, "he noted. Research investment yields anticipated for the 1978 to 1980 period are placed at 30 to 40 per cent for soybeans, corn, poultry, and dairy products. Investment yields are expected to reach 46 per cent for wheat and 52 per cent for swine research. Good’s Auction 111 North Maple Ave. Leoia. In contrast, investment yields in 1977 averaged 5 per cent for municipal bonds, 8 per cent for long-term savings and preferred stock, and 9 per cent on utility bonds. He reported investments in most fruit and vegetable crops return 30 to 40 per cent annually over costs of research. Baumgardt took his figures from a studj made for the federal Office of Management and Budget. He pointed to the need for increased food production throughout the world. Births account for 80 million more persons to feed worldwide each year, with some 500 million persons already poorly fed, according to United Nations estimates “As population continues to grow, and incomes in Sale by: BERNICE E. HERR many countries climb, demand for U.S. food production will nse to levels never known before,” he predicted. World food supplies came under severe stress in 1973 and 1974, he noted, due to a variety of reasons. Smce then, gram crops m par ticular have been fairly large. “Such periods of ample gram supplies often lead to lowered' support for agricultural research as legislative groups tighten PUBLIC LAND AUCTION TUESDAY, JANUARY 15 AT 12 NOON Adjoining the borough of Kutztown and Kings Shopping Mall, just off US Rt. 222, east of the former Kemp’s Hotel along Kemp St. and Bowers Rd., Maxatawny Twsp., Berks Co., PA. SMELTZER Jacob A. Gilbert. Auctioneer investment yield purse strings when gram bins seem full,” he observed. “But even in times of abundance, not all agricultural products are plentiful at the same time through the world. Right now, some animal products, especially beef supplies, have been somewhat limited. Energy costs have sky-rocketed for all phases of the economy. Overall food prices have risen sharply.” Lasting what he termed “other serious agricultural problems to solve,” he mentioned soil erosion and the farmer’s dependence on non-renewable resources such as oil, natural gas, and coal. Other vital needs involve problems with new and complex plant and animal health, and threats to the environment from pollution. Then there are problems of preserving agricultural land and of establishing health and community services for more rural areas.
