DENVER, Co. - Cat
tlemen will vote Feb. 19-22
on a proposed Beef Research
and Information program,
the Beeferendum Advisory
Group pointed out. Mrs. Jo
Ann Smith, chairwoman of
the industry-wide
Beeferendum Advisory
Group, said the four-day
voting period in February
will follow registration
during the period of Jan. 28-
Feb. 6.
MILK
Cattlemen will be voting
on the final Beef Research
and Information order,
which will be published Dec.
14 by the U.S. Department of
Agriculture,
The rules of the referen
dum specify that there be a
registration period of 10
Cattlemen to vote mid-February
valleys ring with
calendar days (Jan. 28-Feb.
6), including 8 business days
for registration. The rules
also specify that there be
four 4 consecutive voting
days (Feb. 19-22). There will
be a waiting period of 12
calendar days (Feb. 7-18)
between the time for
registration and the time for
voting.
Mrs. Smith explained that
cattlemen are to register
and vote at their county
ASCS offices. Absentee
registration and voting will
be permitted; cattlemen
interested in the absentee
procedures should contact
their ASCS offices.
The rules provide for one
vote for each separate cattle
business entry - be it an
individual, a family busines,
a partnership or a cor
poration.
For the referendum to be
valid, 50% of those
registering must vote. And
for the referendum to pass, a
simple majority of those
voting must be in favor of the

program. A 2/3 majority was
required in the previous
referendum in 1977.
Mrs. Smith urged cattle
producers and feeders
across the nation to vote
“yes” in the referendum.
She pointed out that there is
an urgent need for approval
of the self-help program for
beef research, information,
promotion and foreign
market development.
“If we continue to allow
misconceptions about beef
go unanswered, the resulting
erosion of the beef market
will be felt by every cat
tleman in the country,” Mrs.
Smith said. “We simply
must have more good
research and information on
beef if we are to halt the
market erosion which is now
occurring because of diet
health and other claims
against beef. The uniform
collection program is
essential if we are to
promote adequately the
positive nutritional values of
beef.

“I am confident that most
cattlemen now favor the
program. But to assure that
the program becomes a
reality, all interested cat
tlemen must register Jan
28-Feb. 6 and then vote Feb
19-22.”
