Mrs. Jo Ann Smith, chairwoman of the industry-wide Beeferendum Advisory Group, said the four-day voting period in February will follow registration during the period of Jan. 28- Feb. 6. MILK Cattlemen will be voting on the final Beef Research and Information order, which will be published Dec. 14 by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, The rules of the referen dum specify that there be a registration period of 10 Cattlemen to vote mid-February valleys ring with calendar days (Jan. 28-Feb. 6), including 8 business days for registration. The rules also specify that there be four 4 consecutive voting days (Feb. 19-22). There will be a waiting period of 12 calendar days (Feb. 7-18) between the time for registration and the time for voting. Mrs. Smith explained that cattlemen are to register and vote at their county ASCS offices. Absentee registration and voting will be permitted; cattlemen interested in the absentee procedures should contact their ASCS offices. The rules provide for one vote for each separate cattle business entry - be it an individual, a family busines, a partnership or a cor poration. For the referendum to be valid, 50% of those registering must vote. She pointed out that there is an urgent need for approval of the self-help program for beef research, information, promotion and foreign market development. “If we continue to allow misconceptions about beef go unanswered, the resulting erosion of the beef market will be felt by every cat tleman in the country,” Mrs. Smith said. “We simply must have more good research and information on beef if we are to halt the market erosion which is now occurring because of diet health and other claims against beef.
