—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, December 15,1979, 122 After recent heavy rains, local streams raged with vicious currents that tore soil away from streambanks, often exposing tree roots and toppling whole trees. This creates an extreme erosion and safety hazard. Streambanks eroding in Lancaster County LANCASTER Many streambanks of Lancaster County waters are eroding badly and are in dire need of repair, reported Ed Petrus, Soil Conservationist. He stated that several hard rams this year have caused extended pencds of fast, high water that damaged the streambanks severely. According to Petrus, there are two types of bank protection generally used. • POULTRY • HATCHERY • HOG OPERATORS GO FIRST CLASS AT NO EXTRA COST ■<i r I" v '"'4 pi* *■>-'■ yyfi ? -.., : i --1 *’ , f ><>»'■<!. > *%U |||| hr&‘%^ Iwfe! . -t ! ; - * , - ? \ ★ ★ - MAXI-POWER GENERATORS 330 FONDERWHITE ROAD, LEBANON, PA 17042 power LEONARD MARTIN CO. 717-274-1483 Radio Dispatched Trucks 24 Hour Service One which offers bank cover, to guard against direct erosion and scouring. The other retards the flow along the bank, promoting deposition. Most landowners choose the first method because it is more familiar and generally less expensive. Banks can be covered by placing stone “np-rap” in critical areas, grading and seeding the banks, and planting soil holding shrubs like willows around curved sections. At the same tune, any open fences should be repaired or built if necessary to prevent bank damage by wading livestock, which tends to trample the banks. The second type of protection, retarding the flow along the bank, can offer excellent protection. Here timber pilings with wire fencing are used to trap debris and reduce water velocity. However, the landowner must be certain to maintain the open channel and prevent blocking the floodway, in order to prevent the water from damaging other areas. Petrus points out that landowners interested in streambank protection should comply with any Federal, State, County, or local regulations regarding X?m- ■* v <. * ' 'i Takes Less Room ★ Neat Easily Adaptable for Future Expansion Gives Area Protection for each Transfer SW Eliminates Main Breaker Panels assuring Generator protection at all times.
