Because these fabrics lend themselves to soft shapes rather than tailored lines, look for a pattern with simple, un cluttered construction. It should have a minimum of pattern pieces, darts or seams. Unpressed pleats, gathers and soft folds all work well. NEXT CHRISTMAS JOIN OUR CHRISTMAS CLUB 'BO TODAY THE FARMERS NATIONAL BANK OF QUARRYVILLE LARGE ENOUGH TO-SERVE YOU. By Susan Doyle Lancaster Home Economist Choose styles with wrap, drawstring or elasticized details instead of a zipper and buttonholes, which may pull or distort the pile. Check the fabric with the “stretch guide” for knits on the pattern envelope. Make any alterations in the pattern before you cut. Removing stitches from pile fabric can be difficult. The “with nap” fabric layout must be followed to insure consistency of shading to make cutting easier and ensure that cutting lines are followed Have A Pile of Cash Instead of A Pile 8i115... /W Even Santa plans ahead! SMALL ENOUGH TO KNOW YOU /OJ _ accurately, cut with the pile, a single layer at a tune. Use ballpoint pins or tailor’s tacks to transfer pattern markings to fabric. A tracmg wheel may mar the pile or stretch the fabric; it will also tear the pattern. Pencil or chalk markings will get lost in the pile. Check sewing machine adjustments before you begin to..sew any pile knit fabric. Use a size 11 ballpoint needle for light to medium weight fabrics, a size 14 for heavier-weight fabrics. A new needle is a must to prevent snags caused by a blunt or jagged tip. Ballpoint pins are also recommended. Use cotton-covered polyester thread. If you can’t get an exact color match, use a shade deeper rather than lighter. Try a stitch length of 10 stitches per inch (slightly longer than normal). Use a stretch stitch if your machine has one. Otherwise, use a straight stitch, stretching the fabric slightly as you sew. If fabric doesn’t feed smoothly, lessen the pressure on the presser foot. You may need to loosen the stitch tension to keep seams from puckering. Pin seams together carefully to prevent top fabric layer from slipping when you sew. Hand-baste seams with heavier-weight fabnc. A special foot at tachment can help, as can tissue paper stops placed on fabnc surface as you sew. Sew with the nap whenever possible. To reduce bulk at seams : 1. Grade seam allowances around facings or a waist band. Leave the seam allowance closest to the garment widest, grading down to V* mch. 2. Reduce bulk where necessary by “shaving” away the pile with clippers. Be careful not to cut the garment itself. 3. To reduce bulk at waistbands and cuffs, 1 try the ‘stiteh-in-the-ditch” techn ique. Instead of pressing the long, un-notched edge under along seam line, leave it flat and overcast the raw edge. On the right side of the garment, stitch in the Lairtakter Fanning, Saturday, November 24,1979—10: “ditch” just below the waistband or cuff seam, catching the overcast edge. Before hemming your garment, let it hang for 24 hours to “stretch” into place. A hem depth of 1% mches to 2 inches works well.
