3S—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, November 17,1979 Carroll Co. dairy industry prospers WESTMINSTER, Md. - Optimism was in the air for the Carroll County dairy industry as Ralph L. Strock, business manager for Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers, predicted that the general outlook for dairy tenners for the last quarter of 1979 and the first quarter of 1960 would be favorable. The prediction came at the cooperative’s District 3 Annual Membership Meeting held recently in Westminster. Carroll County currently ranks fifth among the 10 leading milk producing counties under the Federal Milk Marketing Order 4, and in Maryland is second only to Frederick County in both milk production and value. It ranks first, however, in milk production and value among the 34 counties in which Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers has members. In September, the 140 cooperative member farms produced 9,596,996 pounds of milk for a gross value ol $1,215,096, leading the next closest county by 2.25 million pounds per and a half million dollars in value. Wilson & Son-Auctioneers Chester Heights, Pa. 215-459-3194 Strock reported on the status of the Holly Plant in Carlisle, Pa. by reviewing die history of Maryland Cooperative’s involvement in joint ventures designed to assure its membership with a ready market for their milk. He stated that without these arrangements, the cooperative was under constant pressure to give manufacturing plants a “sweetheart” deal or lower prices on surplus milk. The manager pinpointed a joint venture with the Maryland & Virginia Milk Producers Association and the Mid-Atlantic Milk Marketing Association as two of the earliest arrangements. The most recent is the co-ownership of the Holly Manufacturing, Plant in Carlisle, Pa. by Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers of Baltimore and Interstate Milk Producers of Southampton, Pa. Strock stated that after a fire in the plant caused by an explosion in the plant April 21, full operation was not resumed until August 16 - almost four months after the fire. However, the plant 10:30 A.M continued to produce butter and condensed skim milk during that time which had to be transported to mid-' western plants at con siderable transporation cost and at distressed prices. He continued that the cooperative’s board of directors has decided that instead of recovering the loss it will make maximum use of the investment credit now available to cooperatives and delay the payment of 1969 revolving funds. Strode said, “The plant has successfully produced dry whole milk in sufficient quantity to assure our customers that ‘Holly is back.’ And, although a number of changes are Still needed to enable the plant to meet all the contract specifications, we are confident that the members own one of the finest, most efficient butter/powder plants in the country.” He described it as a plant for the 80’s - energy and labor efficient The cooperative’s SECOND EQUIPMENT SALE TRACTORS (28) & More 2 - IH 140's & Sicklebar Cub 154 w/mower MF LCG 135 Case 1816 uniloader ID B Case 630 Diesel ' A C Allis Chalmers ID 4010 w/loader Ford 9N Formal) M AC WD 45 Oliver 1750 MF 2500-Forklift w/21' mast David Brown 1210 Dsl. w/looder MF 1135 Tractor Oliver 1855 JD 4010 JD 3020 JD 4430 JD 7520 JF 4010 gas JD 4020 president, Herbert W. Wessel, Jr., encouraged members to recruit' new cooperative members in the district. He also pinpointed the improper use of an tibiotics as a serious problem in the dairy in dustry and warned producers to carefully monitor the milk from any cows being treated. Wessel labeled Maryland Cooperative Milk Producers’ growth as being that of an exceptionally stable business in the face of fluctuating economy. The cooperative’s milk deliveries were up one percent over October 1978. It is the largest Maryland based dairy cooperative, representing more than 1,000 dairy fanners in Maryland, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Virginia and West Virginia. Experts disagree as to when man first visited the New World. Some say as long ago as 75,000 years while others estimate arrival time at 13,000. How did they get here? According to the June Reader’s Digest, they wadked! There’ path took them across a land bridge along the Bering Sea between Siberia and Alaska that was formed during the glacial era.
