—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, October 27,1979 112 Annual Berks BY LAUREL SCHAEFFER Staff Correspondent LEESPORT • Highlighting Berks County’s annual 4-H Baby Beef sale held October 17 at Leesport Market and Auction, were two junior showman. Twelve year old Kirk Fisher and ten year old Andy Haas proved that their steers were the champions of the county as they took the laurels of the show, com peting against 31 other en tries. Kirk, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Fisher, R 1 Oley, won the grand champion honors with his Angus cross heavyweight steer for the second' time in his three years of showing at this event. Kirk had previously shown a steer to the same honors two years earlier. This young showman is a seventh grade student at Oley Valley. He has a younger brother, Kent, who has shown steers for the first time this year. Proudly showing the reserve grand champion steer was Andy Haas, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Haas, R 2 Douglasville. Andy also had an Angus cross heavyweight. This has been the second year for Andy to show steers. He attends the fifth grade at Daniel Boone School District Andy also shows Suffolk sheep but admits steers are tus favorite. This young exhibitor was also named grand champion showman at this event, and placed second in the junior fitting class. Andy has two older sisters, both accomplished beef showers. Not to be out done by the earlier livestock round-ups where the champions sold for record prices, the 4-H baby beef sale also topped its previous marks. Weighing 1,215 pounds, the champion steer sold for a record price of $l.OB per pound. Buyer of the steer was Muthard’s Meats, Temple. Buyer of the reserve champion was Vintage Sales Stables, Lancaster, which paid $.83 per pound for the 1,135 pound steer. Total receipts for the thirty animals sold was $25,796.96.
