The beautiful reigning Miss Pennsylvania celebrated it Friday night at the Park City Mall with several hundred people watching while she beat out three other con tenders at a cow milking contest near the center fountain. Although not a farm girl, the Elizabethtown native, gamely joined in the contest sponsored by the Lancaster County Fanners Association as part of their week-long promotion, and succeeded in being named winner over Miss Lancaster County Cynthia Taylor, Lancaster City Mayor Albert B. Wohlsen, Jr., and “The Country sheriff,” Bobby Montgomery. Montgomery had been the winner at the contest in the past two years, but Miss Pennsylvania outpulled them all to win the contest with .2 pounds of milk in the bottom of her shiny bucket. The three others tied with .1 pound of milk each. Montgomery was chagrined at losing his title, but realized early in the one minute he was alloted for milking that he was not getting enough milk to go for a win. With the luck of the draw he was the first to milk and drew the left hind quarter. Despire proper preparation, the cow ap parently had not achieved a proper letdown when he began pulling. Carolyn Black, who drew second spot in the contest, graciously gave Mon tgomery all the" credit “for getting it started.” She admitted to having received tips from well-wishers on milking, but had never actually sat down to a cow before. She was not timid. She drew up her stool, and after some consideration of whether to milk the right hind quarter with her left or right hand, began. She was 'obviously pleased because "DEUTZ DIESEL EN6INES SAVE 20 TO 400/9 ON FUEL”...SAYS CALIFORNIA DEALER engines A Bakersfield dealer* says, ' Our customers report savings from 20 to 40% on fuel A good example is a centrifugal pumping operation that boosts water for sprinkler irrigation Pulling a continuous load of 75 to 80 bhp, the Deutz F6L 912 engine uses about 4 gallons of fuel per hour This compares with up to SVfe gallons per hour for other widely used makes in this area Where the Deutz will use 100 gallons a day. other engines will use a minimum of 120 gallons That's a savings of 5,000 gallons a year for this one operation He adds, "Such fuel savings will enable some farmers to continue operations where they might otherwise have to shut down ” Deutz air-cooled diesel engines can save fuel and money for you fftauffVer Diesel Inc. 312 W.
