—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, September 15,1979 150 New farmers’ NEWARK, Del. - Delaware’s soil and climate are well suited to the production of fruits and vegetables. But right now the state lacks sufficient market outlets to permit expansion of this potentially profitable agricultural in dustry. This is one reason the amount of produce grown here has declined in recent years. University of Delaware Extension crops marketing specialist Carl German says one way the trend might be reversed is with a centrally located farmers’ market featuring fresh, locally grown produce. There are already several farmers’ markets in the state, including the Wilmington Marketplace, the New Castle County Farmers’ Market, Spencer’s Bazaar in Dover, and the Milford Farmers’ Market. But none of them is adequate as an outlet for the volume of Delaware-grown fruits and vegetables which could be produced. The Wilmington Marketplace, for example, is only a remnant of the once much larger King Street Market, where many local truck farmers used to bring their wares. Jack Wood’s Livestock & Auction Service Sale Managers Cincinnatus, NY 607-863-4141 Farmers’ Market or Spencer’s Bazaar, serve primarily as outlets for clothing, hardware, an tiques, flea-market items, etc., - not fresh produce. And most of what you do find is not locally grown or sold by farmers. Basically, the kind of farmers’ market German is talking about would be a direct outlet for local farm produce—an organized market where consumers could buy direct from the grower, generally at less than retail pnces and m quantities suitable for home use. To find out whether there is any interest in establishing such a market somewhere in Delaware, German and direct marketing assistant Mary R. Deckers initiated a feasibility study last year with funds provided the Delaware Cooperative Extension Service under a grant from the federal Fanner-to-Consumer Direct Marketing Act of 1976. As part of their study they conducted two polls, one of growers and the other of consumers. Though response was light from the 210 growers polled in November, 1978, ap- market proximately 25 farmers (most of them in Kent county), expressed some interest m a farmers’ market. Theoretically, says German, this would be enough people to maintain i small market,, providing a favorable location could be found. Actual establishment and success of a market would depend on the degree of grower involvement and support for the idea, he stresses. Of course you can’t have a market without customers. So last fall the economist also sent out 1,000 questionnaires to potential consumers around the state. PUBLIC SALE ANTIQUES, CLOCKS & BEER SIGN COLLECTION SATURDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 22 AT 6:00 P.M. Fifty-nine per cent said they would shop at one, while another 32 per cent indicated they might do so. Only 2 per cent were definitely not interested.
