30 —Uncaster Farming, Saturday, July 14,1979 The executive committee of the Juniata County Crawford, chairman of the State Women’s Farmers Association is comprised of Richard Committee: David Noss of Port Royal, and William Crawford, president, from Port Royal; Mrs. Peoples of Mifflintown. Farmers advised not to take number one rating for granted PORT ROYAL Americans should not allow the greatness of their country to give them a false sense of security, some 360 central Pennsylvania farmers were told lak Saturday. Speaking to the group of Juniata County Farmers Association members was Lancaster Farming editor Dieter Kneg. A native of East Germany, which has been under communist control ever since the end of World War 11, Kneg drew on his recollections of life m Europe, to remind his audience that Amenca is a land which is looked up to by millions of people throughout the world. Je noted that despite the decline of Amencan power and influence, the United States is still very much revered. The visiting editor emphasized, however, that the world isn’t like it used to be, and the changes of the past several decades have weakened Amenca. “Twenty years ago,” Kneg said, “most all the leadership in business, manufacturing, and technology came from the United States. “The television set you purchased, for example, was made m the United States of America. Now it’s usually a Japanese product. In photography, Kodak is one of the biggest names m the world, but they don’t even bother to make 35-milhmeter cameras. Japan dominates that market. Nowadays most everything we buy is made overseas. About all this wealthy nation has to show m terms of productivity for international marketing is agriculture, computers, and Mickey Mouse.” Telling his audience that he has had the opportunity to travel through much of the Umted States, and that he considers the country to be immeasurably blessed with m ~ % * Members of the Juniata County Farmers Saturday to hold their annual Summer picnic Association spent an evening at the park last More than 350 persons were in attendance. Japan, he said, imports every drop of oil, and yet their industries can still afford to outdo manufacturers in the United States. “It doesn’t add up,” Kneg challenged. “Why is it that Japan and Western Europe, notably West Germany, can outproduce us,” the editor asked. “I believe it is for several reasons,” he contmued. “First, the unions have stifled production to the point where our own businesses can no longer compete at a profit. They think only of themselves, instead of the common good of our country and its economy. Second, excessive government regulations have hampered creativity and output. “You’re regulated in your occupation of farming, and that’s true of anyone else who is in business for himself. We have the government and the unions doing too much dictating,” Kneg exclaimed. “But there is another very important reason for the decline we’re experiencing,” the editor continued “And that’s you and me.” “The Umted Stales has been on top for so long, that we continuously think of ourselves as number one, and we pay little attention to what’s going on. That’s an attitude which is removing us from a position of leadership. Keep your eyes and ears open and be mterested m what your neighbors are doing in the next county, state, or even overseas,” the editor advised. k 1 (Turn to Page 33) LOOK FOR CHESTER CO (Cont) STOLTZFUS FARM SERVICE WENTZ FARM SUPPLIES Cochranville, PA Route 29 215 593 5280 Palm, PA 215 679 7164 M S YEARSLEY & SONS West Chester, PA 215 696 2990 CLINTON CO DUNKLE & GRIEB Mill Hall, PA 717 726 3115 COLUMBIA CO WILLIAM F WELLIVER Jerseytown, PA 717 437 2430 lERLANDCO ERNEST SHOVER FARM EQUIPMENT 19 West South St Carlisle, PA 717 249 2239 DAUPHIN CO SWEIGARD BROS RD 3, Halifax, PA 717 896 3414 FAYETTE CO UNIONTOWN FARM EQ CO P 0.
