The gas is collected through a vertical pipe under the cover and above the manure. Daily charges of manure enter the trench at one end and an equal amount moves out of the other end without in troducing air. It is thus a continuous, closed system, serving as a storage area as well as a methane generator. In connection with the methane production project, Cornell engineers are developing an electrical generating plant to be powered by a Fiat engine which will run on the methane produced in the experimental collecting device. They have projected that at 90 per cent efficiency, the unit should produce 4500 watts of electricity. No plans are presently anticipated for use of the methane in mobile units such as tractors or automobiles. Methane .can be stored most efficiently as a compressed gas and, therefore, requires large volume for storage. Liquification requires temperatures of -250*F. and pressures of 900 PSI.
