10—iMcasttr Famine, Saturday, June 30,1979 Cut the violence and nonsense Despite my strong, personal op position to strike tactics, I’d like to give the dissatisfied truckers the oenefit of the doubt. While I deplore the violence and the sight of rotting vegetables or dumped milk, I’m convinced that the causes of the shut-down are equally deplorable. We’ve got a mess on our hands that has deep roots, and it’s un fortunate that there probably won’t be any easy solutions. And, tragically, violence will probably continue, and could very possibly get much worse. We're struggling for solutions now largely because nobody with enough foresight was in control 10, 20, 30 years ago. We're almost in a panic situation. I pity the farmers who are caught in the middle of all this and can’t get their products harvested or to market. In that respect, the ac tions of striking truckers are criminal and they should not be allowed. It amazes me how a supposedly big, powerful country can be brought GOOD GUYS & BAD GUYS Lesson for July 1, 1979 Background Scripture: 1 Kings 12:1 through 14:20 Devotional Reading: Psalms 1 TOCONTROL MULTIFLORA ROSES This is the season of the year when land owners should give some attention to the control of wild roses in their pasture and woodland. During the last 25 years this wild rose has been promoted by a number of conservatons organizations for the pur pose of promoting habitat for game and for the conserving of soil. RURAL ROUTE Much of our national political life is conducted on the level of “the good guys vs. the bad guys.” The “good guys” of course, are generally “our guys” - Republican if we are Republican, or Democratic if we are Democratic. The “bad guys,” are obviously the “other guys,’’ representatives of the party to which we are unendingly opposed. A further distinction is that the “good guys” do good things and make right decisions, while the “bad guys” do bad things and make wrong decisions. • NOW IS THE TIME ' By^Sm^u g±^^ ultural46,ll ] However, in recent years those wild roses have gotten out of control and are a problem in too many pasture fields and woodlots. During the growing season we would suggest that land owners with this problems treat these bushes with either Tordon 10-K pellets or by spraying with the herbicide Roundup. Control would be more successful' if the treament is applied when the plants are in blossom and when they are growing most rapidly. We feel that multiflora roses are a major problem in far too many pastures and woodland properties. Keep on truckin’ to its knees time and time again. Most any small group can put the squeeze on our economy these days, no matter whether it’s a bunch of sheiks in the Mideast, a well-financed lobby in Washington, or a few thousand truckers on our highways. It’s enough to make a person wonder whether democracy and free enterprise are still alive. It's shocking to think that a nation with' so much wealth and potential and power is so vulnerable to the actions of a handful of people. But that’s where we’re at, no matter how much we don’t like it. I’m unquestionably opposed to strikes - this truckers’ strike, or any other strike. All they accomplish is to add a few more weights to our sinking economy. Rather, we should grab on to some good old-fashioned national pride and work for solutions in the spirit of what’s best for our country. A good place to begin would be to clean uo the foolishness in The King Took Counsel The story of Rehoboam and Jeroboam in 1 Kings throws a different light upon this point of view. For one thing, it is really quite dif ficult - if not impossible - to determine who is the “good gyy-” Take Rehoboam, for example. Our first glimpse leads us to think of him as an arch villain. His father. King Solomon, has died and he is to be the successor on the throne. The nation of Israel seems willing enough to have him as their king, with one provision; “Your father made our yoke heavy, but do TO INSPECT WHEAT During the past several weeks a number of local wheat growers have reported the heads in their wheat plants are not developing properly. After inspecting several of these fields we feel it is a condition called “wheat scab” that is responsible for this poor head development. At the present time there is little that can be done to unprove the situation. These heads cannot be expected to develop a normal wheat kernel. In planning anead ,we Rehoboam asked for some time to make up his mind, but he really shouldn’t have needed either time or assistance. He should have known that their request was both just and necessary for the kingdom. And when, at last, he decides, He makes a disastrous choice: “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your suggest that growers be sure to use certified seed this Fall so that the chance of in fection from one crop to another will be eliminated: TO USE TESTED SIRES CROP During the Summer months many owners of beef, swine and sheep herds will be investing m new herd sires. This used to be true m the dairy business but ar tifical insemination has eliminated this chore for most dairymen. We strongly urge that livestock producers purchase the best possible sires for their female herd. In most cases testing programs are now operating which will give By Tom Armstrong Washington as well as our state capitals. If we had some sensible regulations coming from our lawmakers, our independent truckers wouldn’t be on strike. And the same would probably be true for many other problem situations. The sad truth is that we’ve been harnessed with so many stinking regulations that we can hardly call ourselves an industrious, efficient nation. The trucking industry provides a good example of that That’s why I give the independent drivers the benefit of the doubt What sense does it make, for example, for trucks to run loaded one way, and come back empty. That makes no sense. Truckers wouldn't be so stupid as to not want to run with a load in all directions But the government forces them to run empty half the time. Talk about wasting fuel, there's a classic example you lighten and hard service of your father and his heavy yoke upon us, and we will serve you’ ’(1 Kmgs 12:4) .All Rehoboam had to do to get off to a good start was to make this one single con cession. Thank God, some officials, in cluding President Carter, are beginning to realize that. In fact, President Carter said in a speech more than two years ago: “In the energy considerations, it is obviously a .gross waste to have trucks required to haul a load a long distance and then because of un necessary constraints by the government bureaucracy have to come all the way back home empty.” Those were good words from the President, but we still haven’t seen any action, and that’s what we need. It better come soon, and if the IS Teamsters Union doesn't like it, as they say they won’t, then let’s put them in their place promptly. We’ve got too serious a situation to contend with to allow foolishness on their part The independent truckers are not members of the Teamsters Union, and they've been opposed to yoke; my father chastised you with whips, but I will chastise you with scor pions”' (IKmgs 12-14) Hearkening to God Obviously, Rehoboam is one of the “bad guys.” Yet, m the next passage we see him in an entirely different light. When Shemaiah warns him that it is against God’s will to march against the northern rebels, contrary to his “bad guy” image, Rehoboam “hearkened 5 to the work of the Lord, and went home agam (12:24). Up until this point, Jeroboam, the leader of the northern rebels, seems to be a “good guy,” particularly considerable guidance m the selection of a good sire. The most progressive breeders of livestock feel that a good sire connot be too expensive because he will have great influence on the future of the herd. However, too many cheap or bargain sires have turned out to be very expensive for the livestock producer. Don’t “pinch pennies” when buying your next herd sire. The “good guy” also seems to have changed his image. Christ has helped us to understand that there is something of the “good gay”(|j and “bad guy” in each of us. None of us are so “good” that we don’t need redemp tion. None of us are so “bad” that we cannot find forgiveness. The Christian strives to help the “good guy” within prevail over the “bad guy” that is always there too with this situation we have frequently suggested that property owners adjust their insurance coverage so that replacement cost will be covered rather than cost. The same situation* holds true with personal property as well as buildings. We are aware that some losses in the past have not been suffieciently covered in insurance and the farmer was the loser. Unless the insurance program has been adjusted in the past few years, we suggest that the insurance agent be contacted and be utilized as a guide in givmg full coverage. judging competition, at the Kushner Farm, WellsviUe, 9.30 a.m. Pennsylvania Young Far mers Association Sum mer Conference, today and tomorrow, Bluesy Mountain High School, W Schuylkill County.
