I KEY TO PROFIT 6 WARS Wlffl AGRI-KIHG @ I I I i Has Shown Profitable Results for the Martel Farms Dairy Herd of Lebanon County As we were starting the Agri-King feeding program in March 1973 I was scared because I didn’t want our cows records to drop. I thought our cows were milking as good as they could, because they aren't all purebred and dad hadn’t bought the highest priced cows to start with We were averaging over 15,000 lbs milk and over 550 lbs fat on more than 80 cows However dad persisted in staying on the program, because he thought the idea of keeping things in balance was the way to go ' „ We kept saying it was costing too much until Mother and I checked things out for ourselves and saw the price of feed and vet bills were not going up and the cows were doing better at the end of this summer than they had in previous summers Since we are using Silo King and getting top quality hay and silage I can see a big difference in the way the cows eat The biggest change J see in the whole thing is the way the first calf heifers milk and keep on milking It’s hard to believe the way they are peaking and holding production. I’m sure all these results come from taking good care of the dry cow, feeding her a balanced ration, and taking good care of the calf through every stage of its life (Birth to 300 lbs 300 lbs to 600 lbs 600 lbs to breeding age and breeding age to freshening age) 1 I went to an Agri-King meeting in March 1973 1 thought the whole program made good common sense-testing your feed and balancing the ration according to your cows and milk production We had had fairly good production since 1966 We had been over 14,000 lbs milk and over 525 (bs butterfaf since that year, but along with the high production we had a lot of herd health problems. Since we’ve been on Agri-King our vet bills are lower and our milk production has been going up Aach year We are really happy with the way our cows are performing g £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ £ s £ 5 £ £ | I I £ £ £ £ £ £ £ You need good breeding, feeding and management. Artificial breeding has helped us to obtain quality cows. Now it is up to us to get these cows to reach their potential with proper feeding and management. First we must realize that the milk the cow produces comes from one of two places - the feed she eats or her body reserves, j We at Agri-King want to supply as much as possible in the feed so your high producing cows stay in the herd longer. These are the cows that make the most profit and also give us the best herd replacements. But remember your roughage is what makes the'difference (hay, silage and grain). We must get the feed tag on your hay mow, your silo and your grain bin. Testing for protein, calcium and phosphorus, magnesium, nitrates, heat damage, fiber and moisture must be done, not once or twice a year, but monthly to keep up with the roughage changes. The changes in_ your roughages make a big difference when feeding high producers. The higher your level of production the more accurate you need to be if you want to maintain herd health along with milk production. iutheasternpa REGIONAL MANAGER George F DeLong 225 West Woods Drive Litnz, PA 17543 Phone 717 626 0261 Eastern Lancaster Co Melvin Herr RD2, New Holland, PA 17557 Phone 717 354 5977 Northern Lancaster Co Ear) B. We looked at the vet bills, the feed bills and the way the cows were holding production thus far through the summer This is when ) decided that maybe Marvin didn't make the wrong decision after all Now I’m surely glad we’re using the Agn-Kmg Feeding program The boys and I do the it’s a pleasure to milk cows that give a lot of milk and do not cause a lot of problems r ■“* K ioothern Lancaster Co Henry DeLong, Jr RD2, Box 69 Peach Bottom, PA 17563 Phone 717 548 3471 Southeastern PA Aldus R King RDI 80x67A Atglen PA 19310 Phone 215 593 5952 Berks Co Paul D Deßoard Longview Road RD3 Bcwertown PA 1951 J PN ne 689 5365 JIM MEYER I do all the feeding and vyhen we first started the Agn-Kmg program it took me a little longer to do the feeding I thought this was a big waste of time, but now it doesn’t take me any longer to ,feed the cows that it did before' It’s enjoyable feeding and caring for cows that are averaging over 19,000 lbs of ipilk ahd over 700 “lbs of fat MRS.
