15t—Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 7,1979 Rains spur arrival of plant diseases COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Rainy weather in early April appears to be triggering a pattern of fungus infection in Mid-Atlantic area home and commercial fruit orchards that is reminiscent of five years ago. This word comes from Dr. Leslie 0. Weaver, Ex tension plant pathologist and professor of botany at the University of Maryland at College Park. Dr. Weaver reports that mature spores from the overwintering stage of apple scab fungus were found April 1, on trees at Hancock (Washington County), in western Maryland’s commercial apple-growing area. These requirements are: Mature ascospores from scab-infected leaves of the previous year; Green leaves exposed from current season buds; and sufficient hours of wetting for infection to occur. Delayed dormant oil sprays containing a fungicide would have protected the emerging small green leaves if applied before the rainy spell started. Dr. Weaver com mented. But if you are among the many who didn’t get their dormant spray applied this year, get set for an eradicant spray schedule which calls for applications every six to ORCHARD EQUIMENT ANTIQUES AND HOUSEHOLD GOODS eight days between now and the end of May. Such regular spraying is important both to insure scab-free fruit from this year’s crop and to protect the new buds which will bloom and produce fruit next year. If apple scab was present on your trees last year - or in nearby orchards - pre bloom sprays should contain an eradicant fungicide like dodine (Cyprex) or benomyl (Benlate), either alone or m combination with a protectant such as captan. So this situation may be a precursor to comparative degrees of plant disease problems that may occur across the state in the next month or so.
