And good soil is an ab solute must if you want to have a successful garden. This is especially true for a vegetable garden, says University of Delaware Extension garden specialist Dave Tatnall. The soil should be fertile, deep, crumbly and well-drained. It should also be reasonably free of stones and other debris. You can improve the soil and make it more productive by working in organic matter, lime and fertilizer. Organic matter improves soil structure and drainage. It may also add' valuable plant nutrients. A \ i A Member F 0 I C Lancaster Farming, Saturday, April 7,1979 Sources of organic matter include animal manures - especially horse and cow manures -, mushroom soil, peat moss and garden compost. Do not, however, use sewage sludge from treatment plants on your vegetable plot. This material can contain large amounts of heavy metals and soil scientists are still not certain whether such toxic materials can be taken up by plants, rendering them harmful to eat. Lime helps to maintain proper soil acidity, improves soil structure and supplies calcium and magnesium needed by plants. Ground or granulated limestone is the form recommended for garden purposes. DEPEND ON DEKALB required by plants for proper growth. A complete chemical fertilizer is usually recommended. Such a fertilizer contains nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potash ~(K}, 4isted-asper centages in that order. A 5- 10-10 or a 5-10-5 fertilizer is best for vegetables, says Tatnall. You can also use an organic fertilizer, but this will usually be lower in nutrient content than a commercially prepared fertilizer. To determine how much lime and fertilizer your soil actually needs, you should have it tested. Penn State University and the University of Delaware offer a soil testing service for a small fee.
