One of the most common money management mistakes is failure to make a workable, financial plan. Any plan must be suited to the people it affects, but common guidelines can be followed: 1. Begin saving early. Put a portion' of income, regardless of size, away each month. BEFORE COLD WINDS STOP BLOWING If winter sneaked up on you before you had your bouse weatherproofed, now’s the time to weatherstrip, caulk, and insulate, while the cold drafts are warm memories. Extension energy specialists at The Penn sylvania State University say conservation is the best single way to beat inflation. To determine how much savings you can make in energy usage, follow these tips: •Caulk and weatherstrip doors and windows to save up to 10 per cent or more in annual energy costs. These are easy do-it-yourself projects. •Install adequate in sulation, which can save you as much as 20 to 30 per cent on your utility bill. In sulation needs depend on the heating zone in which you live and the amount of in sulation you already have. Most of Pennsylvania lies in Zone 3; insulation recommended for this area is R-30 for ceilings and R-19 for floors. R-values or numbers are insulation efficiency ratings. As a rule, the higher the R-number, the more effective the insulating capability. - Steps taken now to make your home more nearly air tight can also pay dividends this summer, especially if your home is equipped with either a complete air conditioning system or*a window-mounted air cooler. Cooler, more dense air will try to find a way out of the house. It’s to your advantage to ensure it doesn’t. One way is to install screens only on those windows that are opened to provide necessary ventilation. If you have storm windows on other windows, leave them on. This type of energy con servation doesn’t affect your oil tank but it will affect your monthly electric bill. Keep track of all energy conservation expenditures so that you can claim a tax credit on your federal in come tax. If you have questions on energy-saving options for your home, call or write Penn State’s Cooperative Extension Service office in your county. 15 Days Pa.
