—Lancaster Fanning, Saturday, March 31,1979 12 livestock market and auction news Omaha Cattle March 29,1979 51 Cattle Midweek prices on slaughter steers were 2.50-3.00 lower, instances 3.50 off. Heifers closed 1.00- lower. Cows were 50-1.00 higher and bulls firm to 1.00 higher. Fleshy two way feeder steers sold 3.00- lower. Fed cattle prices registered the most severe downturn since last October in reflection of a sharply declining carcass trade at the wholesale level under a relatively light demand. Most of the decline in live prices came at midweek as some slaughterers reduced hours because of un favorable cut-out results and slow movement and other were not aggressive for maximum numbers. One major buyer was out of operation for the week with continuing labor problems. On most days a large share of the supply was good to average - choice and mud was a rather prevalent con dition. Slaughter steers made up approximately 40 per cent and heifers 26 per cent. Cows comprised 10 per cent and feeders 23 per cent.
